Still having not much luck with James McFarlane's death or 1911 census return. I did find a James McFarlane in the Minor records on SP age 40 died in 1917. The ref is 134/AF32 does anyone know what this means and what information it would have if i download it?
Thanks,

Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

134/AF32 is from the Armed Forces section of the minor records. These are normally pages of about 20 names, listing their regiment, service number, rank, age at death, date of death, cause of death, place of death, country of birth.

However, the cause of death is normally very basic, such as "killed in action", "died of wounds" or the like; and the place of death is often as basic as "F&F" (France and Flanders).

All the best,

Hi Andrew
You are right - no info other than basic details. SP have been helpful and suggest contacting National archives at Kew. Quoting the ref DVR15 RHA. This seems to be the royal horse artillery- not sure a Clydebank boy would be in this regiment? No luck with the closest census matches. I might look at obituaries next.

Hi Ailsa,

Does the minor record give his service number? If so, what is it?

All the best,

Hi Andrew,
No service number - not much to go on except the DVR15 RHA.

Have you had a look at the Glasgow Roll of Honour for WWI?

There are a few James McFarlanes noted, no dates but regiment and addresses are listed.
https://www.firstworldwarglasgow.co.uk/ ... leid=10950

There's also the Evening Times Roll of Honour:
https://www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk ... onour.aspx

Its in three month sections, so you need to go through each to check it it does have more information.
Like date of death, date published in Evening Times plus details of wounded and medals awarded.

Thanks for reminding me Wilma - It's a great site. It would be helpful if I knew where he was living at the time of WW1. He might not have been in the war at all.
If anyone who has a newspaper subscription it might have Isabella's obituary which might mention him. I don't know which paper covered Inverness at that time.

Hi Wilma
I noticed you posted about the Scotland's people survey recently. I filled the survey in as I do like the site and anything that helps improve it is worthwhile. I notice a few people on the FB page would like to see it go down the membership route. Originally I was against this idea but many times in my research I seem to get stuck looking for someone with a common name and usually give up . Maybe if I had limitless access to census pages etc I might not give up so easily. Just wondered what other people think about it

I'm against a subscription type membership, as like many I'm only on in fits and starts, and only actually view the certs. even less frequently.

I do have a feeling that it's part of the Law that each file/copy needs payed for individually - I can't recall the details,
but I'm sure that was mentioned years and years ago when this was all in it's infancy.
[I can't believe I've been searching for 15 years plus!]
