CAN you Find these KINGS? .....

Post by ali » Sun Oct 02, 2005 8:42 am

Hi to everyone again.

Well since you were sooo good at finding My David Wilson. Here’s another challenge for you.

I have this family of Kings that seem to be very elusive.
I was wondering if anyone could help me locate them in a earlier Census.

John King & his wife Agnes Nee Greens.

(Census 1871 701/00 002/00 045)

This is them in 1871 at Dee Street West Calder

John King born c 1820 old Monkland occupation Slate Miner
Agnes Greens b tollcross 1829 married Glasgow 1850.

children;
Henry King b 1852 Wishaw
John King b 1862 Dunbarton Kirkintolloch
Agnes king b1859 Ayr
Mary '' b1857Shotts
Margaret '' b1867 Dunbarton

I have not been able to locate any BIRTHS at all of all the family or the Marriage of John & Agnes.
And yes I have searched SP.
And her name is GREENS and not Green.

Thank you Ali ](*,)

Hi Ali,

Be prepared to have imagination around spelling of names. Here are six post-1855 children to that couple, including two additional to your list. These were all on the online IGI and should all be able to be found on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to download birth certificates.
  • MARY KANE - Birth: 31 MAR 1857 Shotts, Lanark
AGNES KANE - Birth: 01 NOV 1859 Kilwinning, Ayr
JOHN MAKANE - Birth: 20 FEB 1862 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
ANNIE MC KANE - Birth: 01 NOV 1864 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
MARGARET MC KANE - Birth: 21 NOV 1865 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
WILLIAM STEVENSON KING - Birth: 05 MAR 1870 West Calder, Midlothian
I didn't find any sign of the pre-1855 births.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Ali

This looks like them in 1881. Agnes is a widow so you can now look for John's death between 1871 and 1881

Hi Jean,
Thank you for the census details.
I have managed to find information on Agnes but I would like to find more on John. I am trying to verify his parents and have not been able to find their marriage Certificate or his birth.
But thanks again anyway.
Ali :)

Hi Ali,

From the births that Andrew found for you you could take a look at one of them on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Birth certs in Scotland show the date of the marriage of the parents.

Also now that you know that John died between 1871 and 1881 you can look again on the same site for his death record. As long as the informant to his death knew his parents names, these will be shown on his death certificate. Also the informant's namemay give you a clue to another family member.

Hi Jean,
Thanks again for info.
I have been on Sp for certificates its pretty amazing that this could be my king family or what ever name they used Kane, Mckane or Makane. It does say on Williams birth that they married in 1850 but all the others say 1851.
This is information I have for John Kings death but as you can see wife's name not quite right, just a wee bit of difference between Currans & Greens. And not sure who the witness was.It does say nephew, his son was Henry and he had grandson Henry but he would have only been at a young age.So not sure where the nephew comes in.
So this is why I am trying to get more info maybe marriage or birth of John to confirm his parents name.

655/2 Entry No 68
John King - Iron Miner - married to Agnes Currans
died 23/11/1880 5hrs 05min A.M at West B? Co , male aged 60yrs
Parents - Henry King - pitheadman & Mary King M.S Clark
Cause of Death - Brights Disease of Kidneys .
Informant - Henry King , Nephew .

So hope you can understand all of this.
Cheers
Ali

Hello Ali,

What was Henry's address when he informed the registrar of John's death?

Hi Ali

As the children born before 1855 do not appear to have been recorded on the OPR and John and Agnes's marriage does not appear to have been recorded either, I think you have hit the proverbial brick wall.

However, I am no expert and maybe someone else on this wonderful site may be able to shed some light on the subject.

Good luck

Hi jean,
Thank you for taking time to reply to my post much appreciated. As you said looks like I might have hit that brick Wall again, but I will keep searching and yes maybe someone from this brilliant site might come up with something.
Cheers Ali
