Can't find deaths. Remarriage?.....

Post by Cathy » Thu Oct 06, 2005 10:41 am

Samuel McGowan=Agnes Johnston 1848, Barony.
Children:
Robert 1848-1922
Henry 1851
William 1855-1855
Walker 1855-1856
Walker 1860-1923.

Robert first married 1869. Mother Agnes Johnston.
Robert second married 1913. Mother Agnes McFarlane.
Henry married 1871. Mother Agnes Johnston.
Walker married 1882. Mother Agnes McFarlane.

Here is Agnes 1881, but is she Johnston or McFarlane?

1881 census: Dwelling: 35 Newhall Street
Census Place: Barony, Lanark, Scotland
Agnes MC GOWAN M 52 F Ireland. Rel: Head. Occ: Cotton Weaver
Henry MC GOWAN M 28 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son. Occ: Labourer General
*Walter MC GOWAN U 20 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Rel: Son.*should be Walker.
James GILLESPIE U 55 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Boarder. Occ: Dyer

I can't find death of Samuel McGowan,Agnes Johnston or McFarlane or any remarriages. What am I missing?

The Walter in 1881 was WALTER not Walker. The twins born 1855 both died young. Walter was born in 1860. The mother's name was Johnston but I have no idea why all the surviving sons would list her as McFarlane on various marriage certs.

There was a girl born before 1855, she died before the twins were born.

In 1881 Agnes is married, not widowed, but I can't see any sign of Samuel.

I've not checked Magowan deaths but M*cGow*n didn't turn up any likely Sam* from 1855 to 1920.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Andy,
thanks for looking. I just wondered if Agnes Johnston died between
1871 and 1881, and Samuel then married an Agnes McFarlane.
Walter is Walker. I have all the certs. Its an unusual christian name so could easily have been misheard by enumerator. I have him on 1891 census.

1891 census: 3. Trafalgar St., Bridgeton, Glasgow. 644/01 051/000 025
Walker McGown, Head, age 28, General carter, b. Glasgow.
Martha, Wife, 26, b. Glasgow.
Agnes, daur., 11, b. Glasgow.
Katie, daur., 6, b. Glasgow.
William, son, 5, b. Glasgow.
Walker, son,(Twin), 2, b. Glasgow.
Samuel, son,(Twin), 2, b. Glasgow.
Robert, son, 3 months, b. Glasgow.
Agnes, Mother, married, 59, b. Ireland.
Henry, Brother, married, 39, General carter, b. Glasgow.

I can't find the death of Henry either, so can only surmise he left the country with his parents.

Hi Sally,

I actually have that cert.
Had I clicked on my other marriages for Samuel, I would have seen that I have him with two wives. One Agnes Johnston, one Agnes McFarlane.
Its all because of the sons certs.:

(1)
1869 27th April
Robert McGown, Hairdresser, bachelor, age 21, 4 Green Street, Glasgow.
Samuel McGown, Pattern weaver and Agnes McGown MS Johnston.

(2)
1913 13th November .
Robert McGown, Hairdresser, Widower, age 65, 4 Muslin Street, Glasgow.
Samuel McGown, Weaver, dec. and Agnes McGown MS McFarlane, dec.

1871 24th October
Henry McGowan, his X mark, Carter, bachelor, age 20, 24 William Street, Glasgow.
Samuel McGowan, Carpet pattern weaver and Agnes McGowan MS Johnston.

1882 30th December.
Walker McGowan, his X mark, Cartage contractor's carter, bachelor, age 20, 38, Soho Street, Glasgow.
Samuel McGowan, Silk weaver and Agnes McGowan MS McFarlane.

Their d.certs. all name mother as McFarlane.

Some McGowan censuses

Post by Jack » Mon Oct 10, 2005 10:54 pm

Hi Cathy,
Some food for thought on these censuses....
It's rather unclear if Agnes was as a widow in 1861 as it's a bit smudged.
I think it is, but it may have originally said something else. Samuel as unmarried in 1861 is clear enough.

Jean McGOWAN 62 in 1861 looks like Samuel's mother as his parents are a Samuel & Jane.
Their forenames are taken from the 1841 & 1851 Glasgow censuses.

Samuel McGowan the father etc

Hi Cathy,
An awfy lot of guesswork & supposition on these, you'd need to do some checking....
This looks like your family, but some discrepancies between 1841 & 1851.
==
1841 cens 644-1 Ed 86 p 17 (Chalmers)

Samuel McGOWAN, 40, shoemaker, b Ireland
Jane McGOWAN, 40, shoe closer, b Ireland [sic]
Walker McGOWAN, 15, --------- b SCT
Samuel McGOWAN, 10, ------- b SCT
Henry McGOWAN, 5, ---------- b SCT
Duncan McGOWAN, 4, ------- b SCT
[can't see Walker or Henry in Glasgow 1851]
==
1851 644-2 (609) Ed 22 p 9 (Gorbals - Hutchesontown)
42 Rose St, Back Land.
Samuel McGOWAN, head, marr, 53, shoemaker j/man, b Glasgow, LKS
Jane McGOWAN, wife, marr, 55, ----------- b Johnstone, RFW [sic]
Duncan McGOWAN, son, 14, shoemaker app., b Paisley, RFW

[living with James Shearer 34, baker, b Kirkintilloch & wife Margaret Aitkenhead 27, b Rutherglen]
Duncan McGOWN [sic], boarder, marr, 25, shoemaker, j/man, b Paisley, RFW

Is this Duncan's marriage? But can't see Margaret and/or children in Glasgow 1861.

DUNCAN MCGOWN
MARGRET RUSSELL
Marriage: 03 JUN 1856 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Chn -
JANE FOSTER MCGOWN - Birth: 03 JAN 1857 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

ALEXANDER MCGOWN - Birth: 24 FEB 1868 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JOAN MCGOWN - Birth: 06 MAR 1872 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
=============
Is this the Martha FOSTER who Samuel McGOWAN was with on the 1861 census? His mother's sister?
Might be worth looking for her DC, and as she doesn't appear to have had children it might be useful knowing who signed it.
She MAY be the sister of Jane / Jean (?FOSTER?) , the mother of Samuel McGOWAN who married Agnes?
Also worth looking for Jane / Jean's DC?
It might help provide proof that the Jean McGOWAN with Agnes in the 1861 census IS Samuel's mother.

Hi Jack,
I finally caught up with this, so just to let you know.
Duncan McGown marriage to Margaret Russell does belong.
Martha (McLean) Foster died 1873, her sister Jane McGowan the informant.

They were together 1871 census at 56 Anderson St., Partick.

Jane died 1873 Barnhill P/H.

Many, many thanks for the trouble and time you took.
Cathy
