Trying to identify John Urquhart. Lookup please.....

Post by Cathy » Thu Oct 06, 2005 11:04 am

John Urquhart, b.c. 1830=Isabella Taylor 1849 East Parish, Greenock.
He was a rivetter.
First child Jane born 1851 Greenock. Others Dumbarton.
1881 and 1891 census (Dumbarton) states he was b. Glasgow.
There are several Urquhart births around this time on IGI, but his death cert. has parents unknown.
Could someone have a look at early census for Glasgow please.

Taylor 1841 census Greenock:

Mary 2

at 121/10

Jane 12 house servant

at 121/11

William 26 Smith
Rebecca 25
Mary 25
Jessie 2mths
Margaret

1851 Census

14/11

Alexander 46 Ships Carpenter
Isabella 46
Mary 12
Alexander 11 rivet bot

also 14/11

John Urquhart 21 shoemaker

There was a 20 year old Robert Urquhart, shoemaker who arrived on the scene about the same time in Greenock

1861

E13/2

Alexander 58 Ships Carpenter
Isabella 56
Catherine 39 Factory woman
Alexander 23 Iron Ship Builder

In the Greenock papers:

Isabella Currie, widow of Alexander Taylor, carpenter, died 61 Main Street, Greenock on the 2nc Dec 1872 aged 72.

The age is a bit out but, as far as I can see there was only one Isabella married to a Carpenter, Alexander.

There is also a John Urquhart of the right age in 1841 in Greenock:

77/1

William 41 Spinner of Flax
Charlotte 35
John 12
Elizabeth 9
William 2
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Andy,
In the Greenock papers:

Isabella Currie, widow of Alexander Taylor, carpenter, died 61 Main Street, Greenock on the 2nc Dec 1872 aged 72.
The widow's widower registered the death!

In other words, the death register entry has her as married to Alexander, but the newspaper had him predeceasing her :!:

Hi David,
yes. He died 1875. Where would you go with this pair? Do you think they belong to each other?

Probably, - his age fits with the Alexander that Andy found in 1861, '51 and '41, as does the occupation.

Cathy

My subconscious pointed out to me last night that there is one further thing that you can do, which is to look for another local match for an Alexander, carpenter with wife Isabella.

The fact that you may not be able to find such a match doesn't mean that it isn't there somewhere else in Glasgow, or Lanarkashire, but it does add that wee bit of weight to this being a match.

There were half a dozen Isabella Taylors, some in the same age group, however I could only see one married to an Alexander and this Alexander was a carpenter.

The newspaper report was from the index, I'll check the actual entry when I get the time, perhaps even this afternoon.

Certainly looks like the correct one. If her parents were named I'll see if I can track them down in the censuses or trade directories, with luck they survived to 1855 which would give another generation.
