Johnstone family Edinburgh 1891 .....
Hello everyone
Can anyone help me trace this Johnstone family on the 1891 census? I have searched scotlandspeople endlessly, but don't know where they have gone to in 1891.
The family are:
John Johnstone 47 Printer machinist / printer pressman
Catherine Johnstone 47 wife of above
Elizabeth 19
John 16
Agnes 14
Archibald 11
William 9
David 7
Georgina 2
In 1871 they are living at 166 High Street Edinburgh, in 1881 they are living at 2 Roxburgh Place Edinburgh, and in 1901 they are in 16 South Richmond Street. There are 4 older children (Robert 27, Catherine 25, Adam 23 and Alexander 21) who I think would have left home, and I have found Catherine (married to Robert Thomson) in Dumbiedkes Road Edinburgh and Adam in Gateshead - think Robert must have moved south too as he is in South Shields by 1901.
Agnes was born in Selkirk, Alexander in Ayr and Archibald in County Down Ireland - don't know what the family was doing there as all the oher chldren were born Edinburgh.
Elizabeth married Richard Davis 20/11/1891 so I think the family would still have been in Edinburgh at census time. Johnstone is rather a common name to search for and I would be grateful for any tips![img][/img]

Researching Johnston(e), Fleming, Bell, Gray, Inches, Hay, Glendinning, Scott, mostly in Edinburgh Canongate 1830 - 1950, but Johnston (e) from Moffat in 1800s, and Fleming from Strathaven in 1830s.

Do (I was severely tempted to write "Hi Ditto" )
Not a trace can I find of wee Georgina in 1891, - while JOHNSTONE and variants might be problematic, Georgina considerably lessens the scale of the task, as does restricting the area to Edinburgh City and setting a tight age range for the other family members.
I also tried wildcards, right down to *NS*N* and *ON*N* .............

Thanks for trying - if an expert like you can't find them, then it's not just me being dim! I too concentrated on Georgina but I've also searched for Archibald & Agnes to no avail. Anyone got access to the England 1891 census as I suppose the whole family might have been down there?
I'm new to this posting messages - think I need practice?

Re: Johnstone family
Hello Do,
I have tried cross-referenced names in Scotland, and had a look in England, but to no avail.
Regards,
John

Hi Valerie
Great to see your post, so long after the original 2005 post.
Have you located the 1891 (Edinburgh?) census for the family?

Re: Johnstone family Edinburgh 1891 .....
Hi Valerie,
Today I logged onto an address that was on my Grandfather's birth certificate to see if I could locate my Mother's family in Edinburgh. I have my Mother's birth certificate under the name of Jessie Sidey Johnstone, born July 14, 1908 in Edinburgh, in the District of Newington, my grandfather's birth certificate under the name of Archibald Bell Johnston born June 9th, 1879 in Belfast, County Down with a Mother's maiden name of Gray. I also have my Uncle Archie's birth certificate that states that the family lived at 16 South Richmond Street, Edinburgh at the time if his birth in 1906. Much to my surprise I came across your information at the address - 16 South Richmond Street, Edinburgh. The Archibald Bell Johnstone that was born in Belfast, County Down in 1879 I believe was my maternal grandfather. More similarities are that my grandfather Johnstone married Jessie Sidey on May 24, 1901 (in your note the name was spelt incorrectly - Sidey was her maiden name. My maternal grandparents had 6 children - 3 girls, Isabella Jessie and Catherine and 3 boys, Archibald, William and Norman. Any information that you can share with me re the other 10 Johnstone children would be greatly appreciated as according to the birth certificates that are in my possession I am a descendent of Archibald. I look forward to your reply.
Regards,
Diane
