1891, probably near Hunterian Glasgow - but where?? .....

Post by LesleyB » Wed Oct 12, 2005 10:14 pm

Hi all
I've spent a fortune on James McNicols in the 1891 census and am nowhere nearer finding the one I want.

1891 aged around 34 by then, James McNicol b.1857 Anderston, Property Agent, House factor, insurance agent, should be with wife Annie Isabella or Annabella (depends what day of the week it was  ) his wife aged about 20, born Edinburgh, m.s. Dick. (they married April 1890, Edinburgh, as far as I know there were no children till 1897)

My mother says she thinks they lived in the area surrounding the Hunterian, back of Hillhead High School when they were not long married -she mentioned Oakfield Avenue & Kersland Street area, but I just can't find them...in 1881 Kersland Street = Govan, Lanark, Scotland Volume 646-2, EnumDist 31.

Can anyone with fresher eyes than mine spot them? I have this sneaking suspicion I must be missing the blinking obvious somewhere.... :?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley

Oakfield Avenue and Kersland Street are both in what is now called the Hillhead area of Glasgow just off Great Western Road. I would have thought that it may have been classed as Kelvin in those days but I may well be wrong. One of the census experts will be able to clarify it for you.

I took a peek at the 1891 census and got excited when I found a James McNicol aged 34 and a matching Annie aged 20 both at Glenorchy and Inishail County of Argyll but she was single and living with her mother so I didn't check out the James - he wasn't on the same page as Annie. :x

Better luck next time

Regards

Hi Annette
Thanks for looking. I'm familiar with the Argyllshire McNicols. There are quite a lot of them, same names as my lot - our paths cross from time to time!

Best wishes
