Post by Skywave » Thu Oct 13, 2005 3:32 pm

Hi All,

Does anyone know if the complete 1841 Census for Scotland (or complete as it gets) is available either as a download or on CD.

Hi Ron,

The complete 1841 census for Scotland is not available on CD or as a download. Many individual districts have been indexed by the area's Family History Society.

The microfilms of the census are available at NRH, various libraries and LDS Family History Centres (may need to be ordered in for you). Without an index, or good idea where your people were, searching the microflims can be time consuming.

The complete 1841 census (apart from the few missing volumes) should be online sometime at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - currently scheduled as Winter 2005, but that schedule is somewhat stretchy.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Whenever the 1861 census comes on line, and let's hope it isn't that long, - the TS User Group have been promised access to a test site "soon", - but I'm not going to be drawn into interpretation of that 4 letter word , but the inference is that already or very soon, the info will be passed to ScotlandonLine by GROS, - the schedule as previously given to the UG was the next one to follow would be the 1841 census.

Why not the 1851 census?, - possibly because it poses a particular challenge in terms of indexing from the point of view of a different system of district references.......

Previous info given to the UG was that the 1861 and 1841 censuses were at the same stage so that one would have hoped that the 1841 would follow the 1861 reasonably quickly, but let's be very, very aware of previous unmet promises regarding release dates plus realise that it all depends on resources at GROS to get a census to the point where it in the final state so that it can be transferred to ScotlandonLine. The saga doesn't stop there in that further progress in terms of SoL uploading it to a test site, testing it internally and further with User Group involvement, before upload to the live ScotlandsPeople site, all depend on resources being available at SoL....... (Please note that for the benefit of Sporran that this potential 120 word sentence was broken into two shorter sentences. :- ..... but for a "but" )

A year ago I'd have finished this email by writing something like....... with a fair wind that should mean that we will have access to the 1861 census by XXXXXXX, the 1841 by YYYYYYY, and 1851 by ZZZZZZ, but, sorry folks, I've been badly burnt too many times.

Oh yes, and then there's the digitisation and re-indexing of the 1881 census, and I have to confess to a lack of any reasonable info on this aspect of the project, - understandably, I trust, in terms of the current availability of the LDS CDs.

Hi All,

As you can probally guess by the length time taken to get round to reading your posts I have been away from my computer for some days (no withdrawal symptoms). Thanks for the very prompt replies.
