1851 Census Glasgow .....

Post by Caroline » Mon Oct 17, 2005 3:43 pm

Could someone be kind enough to look up a couple of entries on the 1851 census for Glasgow please.

1. ANDREW STRANG (age 21-25)(b.Glasgow)

I'm not sure where he would be staying.maybe Govan, and he would be single at the time. I'm trying to get an idea of when his parents died and how many siblings he had.

2. JAMES HOOD (42) WEAVER
MARTHA HOOD (35)
ANN HOOD (14)
AGNES HOOD (11)
MARTHA HOOD (8)
JAMES HOOD (5)
JANET HOOD (3)

All the children were born in Glasgow, but some may have died before 1851. I'm not sure where the family were living.

Any help would be much appreciated

Hi Rachel,

Thanks very much for that.

I'm trying to find out where JAMES HOOD came from though so if anyone is up in the Mitchell I'd be grateful if they could have a look.

Not surprised that you didn't find ANDREW STRANG as I'm not sure I've got the right age. In 1855 when he married he was 28, yet when he died 7 years later he was 27!. He might even have been born in Airdrie rather than Glasgow. Don't suppose there's any sign of his parents William and Agnes who I think came from New Monklands?

:) Hello again Caroline. I tried to find the Hood family on the 1861 census but had no luck.
I did find possibly your Andrew Strang, entry as follows
Andrew Strang age 31 birthplace LKS Glasgow parish 644/9 (Tradeston)
Margaret MCL Strang age 37 Per Doune " '' William Strang age 4 LKS Partick '' ''
Andrew Strang age 1 LKS Glasgow '' ''
Hope this will be of some help.

Thanks Rachel,
I'm going up to the Mitchell in a few minutes.

There is an Andrew STRANG 22 - not in Govan, but in Calton 1851, and not with family. Will look at him anyway.

And seems James HOOD may be a widower by 1861?

Hi Rachel and Jack,

Yes Rachel that's the right Andrew Strang - thanks for that!

As for the Hoods Jack, Martha Hood died in 1860(age 44) from a "wound to the throat" and her husband James died in the Fever Hospital from typhus fever in 1870. I'd be grateful for info from any census as the first placing I have is James the son living with his sisters family at Rottenrow in 1861. However I've no idea where the father and the rest of the family were.

Hi Jack,

That's brilliant! Much more info than I expected and a few new leads.

It's difficult to say if he's the right Andrew Strang though. I know he was a carter when he married for the second time in 1855 and I think I'll have another look at that certificate for his birthplace. His first marriage was at the end of 1851 according to the IGI so I'll try and get hold of the OPR entry to see it holds any further info.

Thanks once again Jack

Hi Caroline,
Added the 1841 details, and also looked at the 1851 marriage....

Hi Jack

Just gets more confusing - looks like I'll have to do a bit more detective work!

Thanks yet again
