1881 Lookup Please .....

Post by grannysrock » Fri Oct 21, 2005 4:03 pm

Hello
I was wondering if some very kind person with the census disks could satisfy my curiosity - I have wasted many credits on SP , but I cannot find James Gale Hunter on the 1881 Census.
Born 19/11/1860 Canongate, Edinburgh , so should be aged 20 . On other census entries his age is correct as is pob .

Occupation ? In Dec 1882 when he marries he is an ironmoulder in Leith/Edinburgh area , but of course I can't rule out the possibilty he did something else beforehand .
I have tried all sorts and looked at many entries - but I cannot find him..

I thought he might be with his mother or father or other member of his family, but not showing up on SP for some reason - so if SKS has time could you check whether he's at the following places ?

1881 addresses Per ScotlandsPeople ,

50 Main St, Newhaven , North Leith
Father George Hunter , apparently alone.

11 Citadel Street , North Leith
Mother Janet Hunter and two siblings Alfred and Mary ( married name Ramsay ) and her child ,

8 Tennant St , St. Cuthberts
Brother Robert Hunter - for some reason transcribed or enumerated as Peter- with wife Elizabeth and family

3 Corunna Place ( Bonnington Road) , Leith
Sister Helen Hunter

For completeness, Two other sisters Agnes and Janet are married and in Argentina . (I wouldn't have thought he was there , but who knows ? )
and elder brother George deceased, his widow in service.

that leaves only one other brother William Hunter born 1854 South Leith - who I also can't find in 1881 ( or ever again) . Occupation in 1871 was shoemaker. (If anyone can find him I'd be thrilled).

When James married in 1882 , he gave the same address as his wife's ( Margaret Home Johnston) family :
Browns Court , 125 Canongate . At the 1881 Census Margaret and family were at 203 Canongate .

By Nov 1883 , when son Robert Johnston Hunter is born, James and Margaret are at 11 Citadel St ( see above ) .

I'm perhaps giving two much detail , but I thought the most likely place to look was "at home" - and there were a few home addresses.

If anyone can find him .... I'll be really really really chuffed

Hi Sally,
This is a possibility - a wee bit older though.

ps, start hinting what you'd like for Christmas - those 1881 LDS Census Cds would save you a small fortune!

Jack YOU ARE Indeed SKS - that really could be him.

POB perfect, Location perfect, Occupation perfect , No wrong parents / no wrong spouse. the age is wrong, but it could be that someone else gave the information or it got wrongly transcribed - I certainly to look at the film to check for myself.

I need to sit and think if there is any other way I can prove it to myself.

Re the 1881 disks - Yes I definitely need to start hinting. You have just proven that to me big-time .
:)

Thank you SO much

Sally
