completely baffled by 1871 - now you see it, now .....

Post by LesleyB » Sun Oct 23, 2005 12:36 pm

Hi all
Hoping someone can shine some light on this as I'm completely baffled - looks like I'm having one of those weekends.

On a visit to my local LDS some months ago, in the days before the 1871 was online, I found the following entry in the 1871 census on microfilm:

1871 Eastwood 562 En dist 12 page 27
no.107, 8 Elgin Villas,
Daniel Mcnicol H widr. 45 Master Mason, employing 12 men, 2 boys and 3 [labourers?] born Bonhill
Archibald son un 15 scholar,
James un 14 scholar,
Maggie dau un 13 scholar,
Daniel son un 9 scholar,
Alexander son 7 scholar, William son 5, born Eastwood,
Jennatt, aunt (she's Daniel's sister really!), un 38, housekeeper, Bonhill

Trying to find out where Elgin Villas actually were/are in today's world I thought the easiest thing to do would be to look the same census entry up on SP and look at the description of the enumeration disrict, and if necessary check the pages before and after the entry for street names to use as reference points.

But can I find the whotsitting McNicols on SP's 1871? I've tried m*cnicol, I've tried several of the children, I've tried dan* m*cnicol any age, I've tried m*cnic*ol*, I've tried the whole of Renfrewshire rather than specifically Eastwood. I've tried just m*cnic*ol* (no first names, any gender) in Eastwood and according to SP there are none. Why? I begin to wonder - is it me? Or are they not there due to a. being missed out b.being very mis-transcribed.

Can anyone illucidate - or just tell me where the heck Elgin Villas was/is please?! :?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Eastwood is one of these districts that straddles a county boundary, that ScotlandsPeople have not sussed out properly yet.

I think I see them there in Eastwood, Lanarkshire.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thanks Andrew - I'd just realised what I'd not looked at. Posted just as you were answering. Thanks for your help. I obviously am just having one of those weekends!

Best wishes
