1851 Census .....

Post by Addicitive » Sun Oct 23, 2005 4:20 pm

Hulloa,

Could you please help me find the following people in the 1851 census?

William Buchan - aged c. 45. He was married but not living with his wife and children. On his son's marriage certificate in 1852 he was down as being a commerical traveller. William's wife was called Jean and she was 35 in 1841, and was born in Lanarkshire.

Any help would be good.

Yours, Henry.

Hi Henry,
Welcome to TalkingScot!

I take it that the family are in Lanarkshire 1851?
Was William abt 45 born Crieff, Perthshire?
What are the children's names? ages?

Ta - Jack

Hello Jack,

Thank you for replying so quickly.
I'm afraid I don't know where William was born; his wife Jean was born in Lanarkshire, which is where she and her children were living in 1841 (William wasn't with them). Their children were as follows:
John Buchan b. c. 1829
William Buchan b. c. 1831
Jean Buchan b. c. 1836
Matthew Buchan b. c. 1839

Thank you!

Henry.

Hi Henry,
Sorry for all these questions, but i'm having trouble tracing Jean (shd be Mary?) and family in Lanarkshire 1851.

Which son got married in, was it 1852? his wife's name? where?
Do you have any marriage details etc for the other children?
This census gives 3 BUCHAN children with the right names & ages....
Presuming you did mean to say Mary 35 (and not Jean) in 1841?

ps, later; the William Buchan born Crieff i'd hoped might be yours was actually a Free Church minister in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
-
pps, later on; i think you did mean Mary, but still can't see the BUCHAN children in 1851 (or 1861) Lanarkshire.
I dare say you'll know of this marriage etc.
WILLIAM BUCHAN
MARY WILLISON
Marriage: 28 JUN 1828 Douglas, Lanark, Scotland

JOHN BUCHAN; Birth: 10 JUL 1829 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
WILLIAM WILLISON BUCHAN; Birth: 20 JUN 1833 St Cuthberts Blotter, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
JEAN BUCHAN; b ~1836 outside Lanarkshire; Edinburgh?
MATTHEW BUCHAN; Christening: 21 APR 1839 Bristo Associate Congregation, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
[there is also an LDS submission for a William Mathew Buchan for the same day]
I'd presume Matthew (at least) survived to adulthood, and it was maybe a descendant of him who made the submission?

ppps - even later on; seems John Willison (30 in 1841) continued to work the farm, Parisholm.
He's there in 1851, but now with wife Isabella Campbell & children, and still there 1881.
