Hello
i am looking for James Yuill in the 1851 & 1841 census age abt 75 yrs
possibly in Newlands East Kilbride.
i have found a death for a James yuill in 1858 aged 82 a farmer & widower Newlands East Kilbride
and am trying to connect him with a wife called Mary somerville(can't find a death for Mary)
his death cert just shows him as being a widower no name of wife is given.parents are given as a John yuill dec & Margaret ms unknown.
i am hoping to be able to connect this James as being the father of my william Yuill .
it is through a marriage for 1st cousins (stated on cert) that has led me to trying to find a James yuill & Mary somerville.
i don't know if Newlands is an area or possible farm name ?
as i have found another death for a James Yuill in 1895 age 74 that also gives Newlands he was single and his parents where a James Yuill farmer and a Margaret yuill ms Couper.
so i think that he could possibly be related to the James that died in 1858 possibly son or nephew.
kind regards maggie

Re; James yuill farmer in 1851 newlands east kilbride
Hi Maggie,
Seems that wife Mary YUILE has died 1851-1858.
It would appear that Newlands was the name of a farm, though in 1861 tere were 3 farmers using that address. So maybe it became an area too.
Sorry unable to get the 1841 census, but here's the next two.

Hello Jack
i think i am losing the plot i picked up your message this morning about 5.50 am as i was getting ready for work and didn't have time to reply
but i thought it was just the 1881 for a family of brothers or at least that is all the info that registered with the old brain and i had a look at the other posting you'd done about the farm and it's only now that i see you have posted lots of info for me so my quick thanks for the info sounds a bit inadequate
(don't think i have spelt that right) Jack i will get back to you on this one .thank you once again your a star

Hi Maggie,
It WAS originally only the 1881 i'd posted - i didn't have the earlier census details at the time; they were added much later.
So you'll be glad to know that you've not lost the plot, and your brain is working just fine
Jack

ps, these might be the parents of gr-daur Margaret?
JOHN JOHNSTON
MARION YUILL
Marriage: 18 FEB 1838 East Kilbride, Lanark, Scotland
--
It may be worthwhile getting the DCs of other children of James YUILE & Mary to see if they all say their mother was Mary COUPER, and not SOMERVILLE.

Hi Maggie
I have this family on record.
Don't know where the connection is with our lot.
I came across Marion while researching the Johnston family.
She married John Johnstone in EK in 1838 and died in 1877
Marion's mother is Margaret Cooper, not Sommervillie
There were three boys amd three girls
not mentioned in the census is Marion.
That is her daughter Margaret in 1851.
Here is her son James in 1881
Dwelling: Pather Farm
Census Place: Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
James JOHNSTON U 38 M Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head

Christina MORRISON U 24 F Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: Farm Servant
Alexander MILLER U 19 M Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: Farm Servant
Will e-mail you later
That was good to get the family on the other census returns Jack.

Hello Jack
thankyou for your message
it's comforting to know i am not losing the plot though that might just be debateable.
i will give you the full details of what led me to be looking for this James a farmer.
on the wedding cert for Alan Martin & Margaret Yuill
31st dec 1859 in Partick
Alan martin age 22 son of William martin farmer & Margaret Martin ms Yuill
Margaret Yuill 26 Victoria street Partick parents William Yuill Plumber dec
& Agnes Yuill ms Paterson
under the word spinster for Margaret is wrote cousins
so i had a look for Margaret Martin's death cert and found
Margaret Martin widow of William martin 14th feb 1881 Bishopbridge western district of Cadder age 81 father James Yuill farmer dec
Mary Yuill ms Somerville.
Looking on the IGI i found only a birth for Margaret with parents James Yuill & mary Somerville no sign of William who i take it to be her brother going by the marriage of their children and the word cousins.
on the IGI i found a marriage for James Yool & Mary Somerville 26th March 1795 in Cadder Lanark
But i also found a Marriage for a James Yuill & margaret Cooper 7th July 1811.in Hamilton Lanark .
i got the death certs for the 1881 census brothers and the mothers maiden surname is Couper
James 1895
John 1890
Robert 1881
and i also found an Andrew in 1887 same parents.
a search on the IGI only gives the girls
Marion b 1813
Jean b 1829
margaret b 1821
now do you think that James yuill was married twice ???
or that the James yuills death that i found that set me on this trail isn't the father of Margaret b 1799 & therefore not my William's dad ???what would your "hunch" be Jack.?kind regards maggie

Margaret Yuill - DC informant?
Hi Maggie,
Just some questions; who was the informant on Margaret (YUILL) MARTIN's 1881 DC?
Margaret Martin widow of William Martin
d. 14th feb 1881 Bishopbridge western district of Cadder age 81
father James Yuill farmer dec
Mary Yuill ms Somerville
--
Was it mother as Margaret COUPER on the YUILL DCs of John 1895, Robert 1890, James 1881, & Andrew 1887?
Who were the informants?
Seems there might be another brother; Gavin YUILL b~1817.

Hi Maggie,
Thanks - was John, Robert, James, & Andrew's mother as Margaret (not Mary) COUPER on their DCs?
If yes, then the 1851 census of James 75 would appear to have an error with wife as Mary 59 - should've been Margaret 59.
Beginning to think James did marry twice.
Sorry for all these questions! Jack
