an elusive ggrandfather .....

Post by Rachel » Mon Nov 07, 2005 3:08 pm

 Jack could you help me further. I cannot find John Baillie (married Stevenson Young in 1843) on the 1841 0r 1851 census or even his birth. I do know that he died in 1857 aged 34. His death certificate shows his father as John Baillie, gamekeeper and his mother as a Dorothy MacKay. Have tried all sources that I know without any luck. He is probably under my nose but I just cannot recognise him. I do not have access to the 1841 census so when you have the time or chance could you have a look for me? info shows he was born in Glasgow.Would be very grateful.

See other report.

---------------------------end
"See other report" refers to John Baillie's 1857 application (D-HEW 10/5/14. p240. No 51222) - 1 page, which doesn't give a great deal more than above.
There is also another PL record for Stevenson in 1890 (D-HEW 10/6/65. p91. No D21796). This one has 3 pages.
So contact Archives at The Mitchell if you'd like photocopies - they'll advise you on cost.

 Thanks again Jack for all that info. I have traced a number of my ancestors to England but had no record of any Baillies being down South. Must take a wee while to digest all the information you have given which may explain a few missing links.
kind regards from rachel

John Baillie

Post by KerryW44 » Sat Feb 25, 2006 2:35 am

Hi Rachel,
I am new to this forum.I am also looking for John Baillie who was married to Dorothy / Doherty McKay.They are listed on my ggggrandfathers death certificate. Hugh Bailie was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in about 1818.He came to Australia in 1837 as a convict. Any help on John Bailie and Dorothy McKays other siblings would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Kerry

 hang in there Kerry. I am trying to dig up more information about my gggrandfather John Baillie. Have already obtained info about his wife stevenson young/baillie about her application for poor relief in 1890's in which it showed her husband's father name as Hugh Baillie wife Dorothy McKay which is different from his death certificate, when she said his name was also John Baillie. I am waiting for the copy of John Baillie's application for poor relief in 1857,the year of his death. I am hoping that this will confirm the name of his parents. Will get back to you when I have more info.
