Hi Valerie
Welcome to Talking Scot.
Do you have the marriage entry for Elizabeth Glenndinning Johnston & Richard Davies? This would give you the parents names of both of them (provided they married in Scotland - I'm guessing that they were in Edinburgh) and would be a good place to start.
You should be able to find it on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
I can see 5 Elizabeth Johnstons in the 1881 in Edinburgh born c.1871, but its a bit difficult to work out if any might be yours without a bit more to go on. The following family look like a possibility if (and only if!) Elizabeth is a recurring name down the female line... but it would need a little more work to know for definate. This is the only Elizabeth I can see in the area whose mother is also Elizabeth.

Glendinning Johnson
Hi Valerie,
The igi shows a birth of Elizabeth Glendinning Johnston on 2nd Sept 1871 in Edinburgh. Paents John Johnston and Catherine Gray. Here is the family on the 1881 census listed as Johnstone:-
Dwelling: 2 Roxburgh Place
Census Place: Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Scotland

Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
John JOHNSTONE 6 M Edinburgh, Scotland
Rel: Son

Agnes JOHNSTONE 4 F Selkirk, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Archibald JOHNSTONE 2 M Ireland
Rel: Son
ps I think Catherine's age must be mistranscribed as she would have been only 11 when her first child Robert was born otherwise. John and Catherine were married in Edinburgh in 1862. The marriage certificate will give you details of both their parents and take you back another generation.
Regards,
Isobel (Edinburgh)

Glendinning Johnstons
Hi Valerie
Elizabeth Glendinning married George Johnston and their son Robert was born in Moffat in 1806. In 1830 he married Joan Scott in Edinburgh. Their son John Johnston married Catherine Gray (daughter of Catherine Bell and Thomas Gray) and Elizabeth Glendinning Johnston was one of their children. I know she married a Davies - I have done lots of research into the Johnston family - Elizabeth's brother John was my husbands grandfather - and will be happy to email you direct.
Very excited to finally come across someone researching the same family!!!!!!!!!

I believe Archibald bell Johnstone my maternal grandfather born in 1879 in county down in Belfast Ireland son of Catherine and John Johnston is the brother of your great grandmother who lived at 16 south Richmond street in the 1891 census. My uncle Archie was born in 1906 and they were still living at this address as per his birth certificate. Archibald bell Johnstone my maternal grandfather married Jessie Sidey may 24 1901. That would make Elizabeth glen denning who married George Johnson my great, great, great grandmother and grandfather. Look forward to sharing more info with you.
