Mc Farlane Alexander.....

Post by baddytar » Sun Nov 20, 2005 11:09 pm

Hi
I have a right rascal called the above.
Born some time in 1858,
Line I was following was Assynt Sutherland ,
and I was
almost certain sure he was Alexander Mc Farlane born too Hugh Mc Farlane and Mary Lamont !!
Hugh the son of John Mc Farlane and Effy Black.
Mary the daughter of Angus Lamont (Gaelic teacher)and Margaret Cameron of Mull.

I was asured Alexander spoke Gaelic/English up until he died in Sept 1927 by his son my father in law......................James Mc Farlane.1906-1978. all other Siblings were born Mc Farlane Carson.they were registered that way!! james was reg Mc Farlane?

Im sure some one may have noticed if he had an Irish Acccent,
As was stated on the 1901 census for no 1 Swan Street Townhead Glasgow born Ireland !!
Question is .........
Could the enumeratior have misheard Islands for Irelands?
But on his Death cert it says his mother was Mary Cameron............
he was only a small child if it was him I am followin, when his mother died just after child birth 1864.she being Mary Lamont.
Grandmother Margaret Cameron died 30/8/1840 in childbirth of a Son Joseph Lamont, who went on to be a free church minister on Skye
so it would have been easy to have been mixed up on the names.........
And to add too the misery!! he never bothered marryng father in laws Mother Lydia Anne Walker Carson......................
Any help on the islands ireland bit please? or even Link?

Hello and welcome Baddytar,

Not much to say at the moment but if you are sure Alexander spoke Gaelic then that would have been noted on the 1901 census.

Hi and thanks for the welcome.
did anyone speak Gaelic on it? from what I read it wasnt noted
, because I know Angus Lamont who was the teacher mentioned and grandfather, was a Gaelic teacher born so he says on Mull.
Hugh Mc Farlane on the 81 census wasnt there 91Census .
and On this Alexander Mc Farlane I am looking for,
his death cert 1927 gave Hugh Mc Farlane as a (Drover) not seaman but 81 census he has retired with his brother John .
Hugh Mc Farlane wdr 39 Master and John Mc Farlane single 37 his Mate were on the boat Matilda in THurso 41.Born Iona Argyle.1871

would anyone bet on this being a realtionship please?
giving that Angus Lamont school teacher and his wife Ann ,had The Boys of Hugh Mc Farlane on the 71 Census Neil15 Alexander13 Hugh 11 at Strathan Assynt
thanks agin all hope to hear from you all.

Hi Baddytar
I am having a wee look through my McFarlane/Black records, to see if I can find anything of interest to you.
Came across an infant death, Mary McFarlane in Stoer, Sutherland, 1864.
Father Hugh, Mother: Mary Lamont.
Her Mother Mary (Lamont) , aged 33, died just after the child was born.
Not sure if you have the
Children of Hugh McFarlane and Mary Lamont:
Neil 1856
Alexander 1858
Ewen 1860
Angus 1862
And Mary Angus Lamont 1864
All born in Assynt

Angus died aged two in 1864
Am still looking for other info.

I did not have the death yr of the child Angus Mche birth Farlane although I was aware it had happenend, so for that thanks.
Mary Lamont died three days after the birth baby died at ten days I had that ..........she was called mary angus lamont mcfarlane the father Hugh was at sea at the tme, the grand father Angus Lamont buried them
So so sad, she must have been so afraid, Mary that is, her mother had died on the 4th child in 1840...........
I appreciate any thing you can dig up on this Alex Mc Farlane and Im very grateful for your help.
My Alex was born 16 Portree Street Glasgow 0/7/33 to James Mc Farlane and bridgit Ruane..............As you see he is getting on.
James had brothers
Katherine Mc Farlane Carson 1888 marr David Armstrong
Alexander Mc Farlane Carson, 1894 === Jean Simpson Rosie
Donald ---------------------------1903. ----- not married cebral palsey
at least two more Hugh and elizabeth both died before James was born They werre born in Swan St and Water Street Port Dundas area.

Greetin's again Baddytar
I have never come across any Ruanes before
However, I have all the hatches, matches and dispatches from the whole of Sutherland for
McNaughton, McFarlane, Black, Lamont, Cameron, McPherson, McLennan McDonald and Watson .
Interestingly enough Joseph Lamont the minister in Snizort married Christina McLennan.
Am still browsing through my lists
