Hello Susan,

It’s always better to have interesting ancestors than ones who weren’t. They were probably thinking of some future genealogist when they did whatever it was to get their names in the newspapers etc. I have a Sylvester who got into a lot of strife in the 1820s and he’s been very good to me. Here’s the full story on yours, I couldn’t find anything about the earlier conviction. (Caledonian Mercury, Saturday, April 29, 1865)

A HUSBAND ASSAULTING HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTER.—At the Police Court yesterday—Bailie Hill on the bench.—a man named Sylvester M'Adam, residing in Ashley Buildings, High Street, was brought up on a charge of committing a breach of the peace by behaving in a riotous and disorderly manner, and assaulting his wife, Mary Sylvester, and his daughter, Helen, a girl of about twelve years of age, striking them on the face with his fist. He pled guilty, and having been previously convicted of assault, he was sent to prison for sixty days.

If you want a copy of the image just send me a PM with an email address.

All the best,
Alan

Hi,
I just found this site. My name is Derek Fitzpatrick, are we in some way related?. The Felix Fitzpatrick mentioned was my great grandfather and the son John mentioned in the census was my grand father. John was born at 15 Leith street on 31st March 1870. He married Helen Young Dingwall (born 30th November 1871 a 3 Weirs Close Cannongate) in a Free Church ceremony on 6th May 1898. They lived at 21 Blair Street. He died at 59 Blackfriars Street on December 10th 1913. Dying so young much family history went with him.
Felix unfortunately is a bit of a mystery. He was found dead at the foot of Salsibury Crags. It was not established whether he fell, jumped or was pushed. I do not have a date for his death. He was supposedly buried in Warriston Cemetry. Despite searching it many times I did not find his grave. Much of the old part of the cemetery is overgrown and in disrepair.

Hello Derek and welcome,

Susan will be along soon and will be so pleased to find another relative!

Just playing with the search on scotlandspeople.gov.uk it looks like Felix died in 1900. It would be interesting to see the death certificate and find out how he died. There may well be an RCE (Register of Corrected Entries) with further information, as is often the case with both accidental deaths and homicides.

All the best,
Sarah

Hello All,

It looks like the one who had the fall died in 1931.

The Scotsman, Edinburgh, 08 June, 1931.
“The body of a man, believed to be of the labouring class, was found yesterday morning in the King’s Park, Edinburgh, at the foot of the Salisbury Crags. He appeared to be between 60 and 65 years of age. The body, which was taken to the City Mortuary, had not been identified last night.”

The Scotsman, Edinburgh, 09 June, 1931.
“The man who was found dead on Sunday morning on the Radical Road at the foot of the Salisbury Crags, King’s Park, Edinburgh, was identified as Felix Sylvester Fitzpatrick (53) street porter, 3 Guthrie Street, Edinburgh.

All the best,
Alan

Oh, so that's the younger one. I thought Derek was talking about Felix, father of John (actually, maybe both Felixes had sons named John...).
Thanks for that, Alan! So there was nothing about whether the death was an accident, suicide or homicide? I guess the death of someone who was "believed to be of the labouring class" was not so newsworthy  But surely, the death certificate must give more information.

Best wishes,
Sarah
