Hi all
Looking to confirm the census district the area surrounding the Hunterian, back of Hillhead High School etc. such as Hillhead Street, Kersland Street etc. would have fallen into in 1891. I think the area I should be searching is Kelvin, (although on the old map it looks like it should be Hillhead) - Can anyone clarify and/or confirm that please?
Thanks
Lesley

Hi Lesley
It is certainly known as Hillhead today although I am not sure what the Census district might be. They keep changing everything.
I don't know about back in 1891.
Good Luck

Hi again Lesley
Just had a quick look at the Valuation Rolls for 1913-1914 and believe it or not Kersland Street and Hillhead Street are in the Parish of Govan. Now that surprises me as Govan as it is today is a good bit away from Hillhead
You live and learn
Cheers

Hi Annette
Thanks for your reply...
but were these streets in Govan in 1891? I'm desperately trying to narrow it down a bit as I'm sure these are whopping huge enumeration districts! Could take hours. I think the LDS centre might have a street index, (they do for some other census years as far as I remember) but I hoped to go along with at least some idea of what I was looking for, just incase they don't have one. I'll only have a 2hr session at the most.
Best wishes
Lesley

I followed advice from Andrew in a previous post http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... numeration and this confirms Annette's advice. In 1881 the enumeration district for the two streets is indeed Govan 646.
I knew that area was Govan Parish then but was surprised at above.

A mistake made by me too for several years. We(Mum & I) knew her Mother had been born in Govan before moving to Dalmuir.
Govan is over the water or through the tunnel(Clyde).Where both sets of maternal Grandparents came from too.
We were looking through Records at the Mitchell several years ago when we came across pages of familiar looking names but in Partick.
"What a coincendence theres a whole family of Torrances/Ross's with the same names/ages as ours, shame there in Partick".
Only when her Aunt visited from NZ & showed where they had all but the eldest been born did the penny drop
We presumed that they had lived in Govan proper & moved to Partick on starting school before heading for Dalmuir.
