What is name of stepson .....

Post by AlanMC » Fri Dec 16, 2005 1:23 pm

Hopefully I have uploaded the 1861 census for this ok.
It is for the family of James Blain, one name I can't make out is that of the stepson Henry.
One other thing on this census is the name of the Mother Jannet which should be Elizabeth (ms Ewart).
Every other name of the children and ages all tie in with my James and Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Ewart had done it with the butler so to speak and a son Henry was born 1842 (got this info from a living relative)
He was raised as the son of James and is due to die at about the age of 18 so I was surprised to see him still alive in 1861.

Hi Alan,

I would say the step-son's name is Hanrey Lavrey, age 18, a fisher, born Wigtonshire, Stranraer. At a best guess, may be Henry Lavery with some obscure spelling (mistake?).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Agreed!

To me this sounds very much like the result of a household schedule filled in by the enumerator, as the Head couldn't, and I can well imagine a broad Ulster pronunciation of Henry Lavery being heard and therefore recorded by the enumerator as Hanrey Lavrey xmas:eek:

Did James sign associated BMD records or did he make his mark?

David

On the BMD I have, most have been done by Elizabeth making her mark, I would be surprised if he was able to write myself.
If you where to hear the folk from Stranraer speak even today you will hear them talk with a mixed pronunciation of Ulster and Scots.
