Census Help .....

Post by StewL » Wed Dec 21, 2005 11:49 am

I have been trying to find my Daniel Laurie (or Lawrie) on the available censuses. But get no matches at all for any and those that I did get were too young and in the wrong families.

I was basing my searches on the following information:

Daniel Laurie and Janet Porterfield 1871 census.
Dwelling 65 Charlotte St
St Andrews Parish, Glasgow Lanarkshire
Daniel Laurie Head 40 M Glasgow Lanarkshire Shoemaker
Janet Laurie Wife 40 F Glasgow Lanarkshire
Robert Laurie Son 12 M Glasgow Lanarkshire
Janet Laurie Daur 7 F Glasgow Lanarkshire

Daniel Laurie and Janet Porterfield 1881 census.

Dwelling: 38 Sydney St
Census Place: Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203637 GRO Ref Volume 644-3 EnumDist 8 Page 4
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Daniel LAWRIE M 50 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Shoemaker
Janet LAWRIE M 50 F Johnstone, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Isabella LAWRIE U 17 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Sewing Machinist
Christina MC BRAE U 17 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Fancy Paper Box Maker

Which was provided to me by the kind souls either in the Old SP or TS, but my memory must be failing me  .

But after sending a contact form Alison replied:
"It depends on where you were given this previous information from. If it were another source, then it may have been incorrect in some way. If it were this site , then possibly it has been mis indexed or not recorded as you would have expected it."

So could anyone tell me where the information came from please, I know I am a nuisance, but if I got it earlier, then I lost the information when my hard drive fried.
I was only interested in this family up to 1881 as they both died before the 1891 census.

Thanks
Stewie

Thanks once again Jack

I was just wondering was it you who gave me the other censuses, as the reply I got from SP seemed to be saying that if it wasnt from them it may be wrong

I just havent had any luck trying to find them on SP at all, I must be doing something wrong, or maybe I'm not holding my tongue the right way

Hi Stewie,
Don't think it was me - i need an address to look for anyone in Glasgow 1871.
I'm a bit unsure, but which censuses can't you find matches for Daniel?

Would you like me to look at 65 Charlotte St in 1871? Or do you already have full details?

Thanks Jack

I just have no idea as to who gave me the census information, but I havent been able to find anything on 61, 71, or 81 censuses.

I dont know if the information I previously posted is the full information, but if it isnt I would appreciate whatever you can give me.

I suppose I want to find the source of the information, to give me some backing in my correspondence with SP aka GROS.

Hello Stewie,

I doubt that I supplied the original information, but I can help with replacement information.

You are spot on with the 1881 information, which is readily found by searching on '38 sydney' for the address and 'glasgow' for the census place (but do not include the quotation marks).

For 1871, he is indexed as Lanrie despite clearly being a "u". He is the last entry on the page, so you will need to use the "Next Page" feature. Always best to use wildcards when you can, but only if there are not too many results from the search. La?r?? aged 35-45 in Glasgow produced only 2.

Regards,

John

Thanks John

I saw that Lanrie entry but of course dismissed it as one does

I think I will have another look at it in a moment or two to see it.

Again thanks
Stewie

Thanks John

I got the 1871 census indexed under Lanrie (both pages), I will contact GROS to notify them that it is incorrectly indexed some time today. I will also have another shooftie at 1881 sometime later also.
