Sorry, I don't know his parents or sibs names. His occupation was: Boat Builder. Only info I have is from Julia McLean's marriage cert to James Reid 1893. Stated James McLean as deceased. Julia McLean was born 1864 if that helps any. Perhaps he would be listed in 1861 census as HOH.
Thank you kindly for your prompt response.

Hi toro

....I need to get over "Christmas Brain mode" and get back to "Genealogy Brain mode"

These are the children from the IGI for James and Catherine

1. DONALD MCLEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 19 MAY 1869 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland

2. MARION MCLEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 12 AUG 1859 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland

3. JOHN MCLEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 19 JUN 1857 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland

4. ALEXANDER MCLEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 10 OCT 1861 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland

5. JULIA MCLEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 01 MAR 1864 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland

6. JAMES MCLEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 11 SEP 1866 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland

and here is the marriage from the IGI that you already know about....

James McLEAN - Catherine BLACK
Marriage: 13 MAR 1855 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Source Information:
Batch No.: M115641 1855 - 1875

but when I searched SP for this marriage it wisnae there! But then there is one for John McLean and Catherine Black in 1855 Renfrew Greenock.
. Have you viewed this yet? Being an 1855 marriage it should state lots of intereseting data! I'd look myself but my credits have expired and I was rather hoping to give my plastic a wee rest right now  .....

Best wishes
Jean

Jean, Thanks for the info. As soon as I get some dates together I'll go into the site. I had a bad experience in 2003 where as NO Image was available on names I was researching. Could have been updated by now though.
I think you just may be right about John being married to Catherine. Going by the naming pattern: John was born before James.

Thank you for your prompt response.

Hi toro

I don't want to get your hopes up and have them dashed....but usually the "no image available" records tend to be from the OPR (ie prior to 1855). 1855 is an excellent year to get a Birth, Marriage, or Death record due to the extensive data it contains. With a bit of luck this MC will state James (or John as the case may be) parents. Please let us know how you get on!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Toro,
More questions - sorry!
I'm a wee bit confused; but it was it 1851 Greenock you needed for James McLEAN, and not 1861? (1861 available on SP)
Or have you already got the 1861? If yes, what were the details?

Do you have the MC details of James McLEAN & Catherine BLACK?
Marriage: 13 MAR 1855 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland.

Also this BC for the 1st? child Julia?
JULIA MCLEAN - Birth: 23 JUN 1855 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland.

Was James born Inverness?, and Catherine born Campbeltown?

I dare say you've got Catherine & family in 1881,

Jack, No problem. I do have a way of confusing people. I'm a 'Wee' bit confused myself. This is the information i have but obtained from IGI.
Not documented. Could very well be wrong.
Catherine Black Born: August 12, 1831 Iona County Arygll
James and Catherine were married in New Monkland Greenock Renfrew
Again, that was from IGI.
Birth Cert:
Julia Mc Lean Born: March 1, 1864 York Street Newton District of Ayr
County Ayr
Father: James Occ: Boat Builder
Mohter: Catherine (Black)
I do have the 1881 census. Thinking I need 1861 instead of 1851 census since James and Catherine were not married in 1851.
1st born: John McLean Born: June 19, 1857 Ayr Ayr
I would imagine that would be the area for the 1861 census.
Someone has hacked into my computer using my s/n. So am having problems getting into sites.
Thank you for your prompt respsonse.

Re McLean & Black

Hi again Toro,
You'll be fed up with me and my questions!
Just a wee point - New Monkland isn't in Greenock, Renfrew; it's a Lanarkshire Parish.
--
Presuming (never wise...) that you are descended from Julia McLEAN who married James REID 1893.
You seem to have her 1864 BC; was her parents' marriage on it as 13 Mar 1855, Greenock? (another presumption for now).

If yes, have you looked at it? As Jean said it will give lots of interesting data (1855 Scottish BMDs are excellent).
Apart from both sets of parents being named, it should say where James & Catherine were born.
Their 1st child MIGHT be Julia b 23 Jun 1855 - i'll be very surprised if she isn't.

They should be in the town of Ayr 1861, but this is the nearest matching family i can see - as McCLAIN.
That 1855 MC (if it IS them) is really needed to see if these ARE their correct birthplaces!
But it appears Catherine is as Marion, maybe an error - index or otherwise?

1861 cens 578 Ed 20 p 24 (Ayr)
James McCLAIN 35, b Inverness
Marion 30, b Campbeltown
John 3, b Ayr
Marion abt 1, b Ayr
--
The 1871 census may be useful - possibly with father James. If Catherine is a widow then he should've died 1868-1871.
But if Catherine still married in 1871 (and 1881 is correct as widow) then James should've died 1871-1881.
--
May i ask where you got Catherine BLACK as from Iona? (i notice the 13 Aug 1831 christening in the IGI is an LDS submission).
--
So very sorry to hear of your hacked-into computer (the low-lifes who do this are despicable - they cause much heartache).
I'm still very much a novice with a pc, but i take it you have Firewall & Anti-Virus software etc installed to help prevent it happening again?
