1851...Somewhere in Scotland! .....

Post by Emsworthy » Sun Dec 25, 2005 4:09 pm

Hello,

This is all a bit vague at the moment, but I'm stuck with the following people in 1851:

Mary Ann Gibson - 3xGt Grandmother - b.1825 South Shields England. She is on the 1861 census as being married, but her husband isn't at home (typical!). Her eldest son George Gibson b. c 1852 is listed as being born in Scotland - don't ask me where! So I would imagine they would've been in Scotland in 1851 as I can't find her easily on the England Census.

So, really what I'm looking for is help with the next step - a birth for George, a whereabouts for the 1851 census or a marriage for Mary Ann ?? to a ?? Gibson somewhere around 1848-1851...

In the meantime, I will order my 2xGt Grandfather's birth certificate and see what that reveals about his Father's details!

Thanks for any help received!

Regards, Emma xmas:wink:

Hi Emma,
Welcome to TalkingScot!
I think you may have to get Mary Ann's hubby's forename for any chance of finding them in Scotland 1851.
Likewise for any possible marriage - and Mary Ann's maiden name would be a help!

If they were in Scotland you might also watch out for Mary Ann being recorded as Marion (or similar), or even just as Mary alone.
There are plenty Mary GIBSONs in the West of Scotland (eg AYR, DNB, LKS, RFW) areas for 1851; much fewer Mary Ann GIBSONs though.
But the only one i could see that might have suited was on the young side (20) and born Ireland.

So it looks like you'll need a hubby's name; then (if SP are true to their word) start searching next month in the 1851 All Scotland index.

The certificate is on it's way!

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the reply! I have ordered the birth certificate of Mary Ann's youngest son (couldn't find my 2xGt Grandfather's birth - typical! ) so that should be here soon!

I'm fine rattling through the England census records, but throw me over the border and my brain goes completely. I really must study the map a bit more...!

Just an update...will be back in another week with more information!!

I applied for a birth certificate for a family member, but alas, it came back without a Father's name!! Why did they do this to us?!

After much searching, I have managed to locate my 2xGt Grandfather's birth and have ordered the certificate this morning. It's due date is 13th January, but if the wonderful people at the records office are as good as usual, it might arrive sooner!

Have received the birth certificate of my 2xGt Grandfather's birth and, surprise surprise, there's no Father's name on there either!!

It does tell me though that Mary Gibson was formerly Mary Wake. Don't know if this will help at all?

Hi Emma,
Still nothing - sometimes a woman is listed with her maiden surname in the censuses (more so the earlier ones).
But nothing for Wake(s) or Waik(s) either in the the 4 West of Scotland Counties mentioned above.
Could very well be elsewhere as George's birthplace was only as Scotland (so a wait for SP's online index...)

I know nothing of English BCs, but i would have to wonder why twice there is no father is mentioned....
Or maybe it's just me with a suspicious mind  (which i never had before i started the Family History).

Hello Emma,

the mention of Scotland for the 1861 census suggests that the census was in England or Wales. If Mary was somewhere near South Shields, do not discount the possibility that George Gibson was a son from a previous marriage. Her husband could have come to Durham looking for work and married her just before 1861, although I did not find a marriage on FreeBMD or the LDS.

What is the full extent of the 1861 census, have you found her in later censuses, and what do the birth certificates state in full?

Regards,

John

Evening!

Thanks for the replies so far. I've been asking for lookups on Rootschat.com too...thrown in all sorts of possibilities with this one...maybe George was born in Scotland, but registered in England etc. etc. etc.....

Anyhow, the 1861 census shows

10 Union Street, Hetton le Hole, Durham

Mary Ann Gibson, Head, M, 36, Washerwoman, Durham So Shields
George Thos Gibson, Son, 9, Scholar, Scotland
John Gibson, Son, 5, Scholar, Durham Hetton le Hole
Joseph Gibson, Son, 3, Durham Hetton le Hole
Matthew Gibson, Son, 9mths, Durham Hetton le Hole
