Please Help.....

Post by Miss Poohs » Sat Dec 31, 2005 3:32 pm

yet again

I seem to have come up against one brick wall after another this past week - and it's starting to get to me!!!

I've got my G Grandmother's name here, but the only thing official apart from the marriage cert to my G Grandfather John McEwan, I can find is the 1901 census, oh and I have her death cert too.

She died 11 Sept 1910 at the age of 32 yrs.

She was Jessie Ann McLean and she married John McEwan 22/6/1897 where she states she was 18 yrs old. This would give an approx year of birth as 1879.

On the 1901 census it states she was born in Ross - shire.

I have spent a small fortune on SP over the last couple of days trying to trace my disappearing rellies.

Can someone please help me unravel this mystery - I'd like to see her birth cert or a more recent census.

Her parents were Donald McLean and Lily Allison, and I can't find anything of theirs either.

I know I'm a pest, but I'm well and truely stuck.

Hi Janice

There are two Jessie Ann McLeans in Ross & Cromarty about the time you want - 1878 in Cromarty and 1879 in Knockbain. Where was she in the 1901 census and when she died? Have you nabbed her in 81 census - might give you a clue where she was born as she'd only be about two then, also if there were any siblings.

I know how it feels to spend a fortune on SP and get nothing that belongs to you  But that seems to go in cycles -famine or feast - or is it just me? Don't give up - she's waiting for you somewhere

Best wishes

Hi Janice

This is far from conclusive....but....a search of the 1881 census for the Highlands gives this one Lilly McLean..with the correctly named hubbie....but alas no daughter!!!! Is is possible Jessie was stretching her age on the MC???? Hmmmm......

Hi Jean

I suppose, like me, you had a look for Jessie in the 1881. I tried a few years either side of a birth year of 1878/9. There are a few, but not with the correct parents.

There is a birth for a Jessie McLean in 1883 in Lochs, Ross and Cromarty on Scotlandspeople. No credits left so couldn't view it.

Could you be correct in the fact that her age at marriage is suspect :?

Well those look promising.

In 1901 she was married to John McEwan and living in Alloa Clackmannanshire.

I seem to have looked in all the wrong places :? .

Although I've not been doing this very long, I've learnt enough to know not to put too much crediance on a stated age.

This is something my ancestors seem to be experts in - one of them even stated the wrong maiden name for her mum!!!

I couldn't even find anything for Donald and Lily.

Don't know how you guys do it, but you're a smashing bunch =D>

Well....I couldn't resist...

While the birth of Jessie Ann McLean in 1879 in Knockbain looked most inviting....the parents didn't line up. Soooo....a further delve comes up with...

1881 MACLEAN JESSIE ANN F URRAY /ROSS AND CROMARTY 085/00 0033

who certainly appears to fit.....

Hi all

I'm trying to pick up tips as we go along, and love listening to the suggestions batting back and forward, but usually they're too far gone for me to keep track. Being in at the start of this one gives me half a chance of keeping up!

Have we ruled out Jessie Ann born 1878 in Cromarty? If so, what was wrong with her?

Best wishes
