Lookups

Hi Marilyn,

The main Scotlands People site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk has the 1891 census. It would be just as easy to do your own lookup.

Marilyn

I echo Andy's comment.

One wee tip. When searching on ScotlandsPeople use a wildcard and search for DI*ON, and don't be too exact about the ages in terms of the match of kids ........

I assume you're talking about the 13 McDowall St entry from the 1881 census.........

I was unable to find them in the 1891 or 1901 Census on SP and I can't remember if I tried to use the wildcard, but I'll give it a whirl. Yes, they did live at 13 MCDowall Street in 1881. Thanks Andy & Davie!

I can assure you that Hugh and Elizabeth DI*ON are there in the 1891 census plus kids Janet, Agnes, Hugh and Mary Ann plus a grandchild, but no step-children, and not necessarily in the same location as 1881. Given the mix of ages in the 1881 census entry the marriage between Hugh and Elizabeth must have been around 6 to 8 years before 1881.

The same very obvious main variant of DIXON will also quickly lead to the family in 1901; Hugh and Elizabeth plus Hugh and Annie; and three of the now adult children on the same page in another "household" !

Have you managed to sort out the very tangled tale of the 1881 census entry?, including the quite difficult to find marriage of Hugh and Elizabeth; and the enigma of the children of Hugh's previous marriage? Elizabeth's previous marriage is a straightforward matter........

Davie (Me?, a "Guest"; Nah!, just too long away on a certain site on this quite fascinating query !! :? )

Thanks for this reply. I've rechecked my records on sp and found that I had not tried the wildcard search, but will later today. Very excited! The search for this family has indeed been a very tangled tale. It begins with Hugh Dixon's marriage to Janet Hamilton on 1 December 1854, Kilbirnie Scotland and according to Janet's Death Cert dated 17 February 1874, her parents were; William Hamilton d. & Mary Montgomery. Children of this marriage were; Hans b. 1855 d. 1855, Hans b. 1856, Margaret b. 1857, Agnes b. 1858, Elizabeth b. 1860, Ann b. 1863, Janet b. 1866, William b. 1869 and Letitia b. 1871. Margaret was my gg grandmother and married Matthew Morning, they sailed to the US 1883. I found Matthew along with Margaret's younger sisters; Janet & Letitia on a passenger list dated 8 May 1883 sailing into Castle Garden New York. Margaret's name was not found on this list, yet she had to ither be here or arrived shortly afterwards, because she gave birth to their 3rd child on July 1883 in Grafton Massachusetts.
Hugh Dixon's 2nd marriage was to Elizabeth Kelly on 14 September 1874 and they lived on Main Street Kilbirnie. They began a second family and their first born was Hugh Dixon b. 1881 d. 1882, so I knew about Hugh and Mary Ann, but did not know they had a second son Hugh. I've not caught up to doing any research on Hugh's step children yet. The marriage record of Hugh & Elizabeth was indeed difficult to find, mainly due to the fact that they listed his name as "George Dixon" and not Hugh Dixon.

Marilyn

Also worth mentioning would be the fact that had it not been for the assistance from Bob G., I don't believe that I would have been as successful in finding the Marriage Cert. on SP of Hugh Dixon & Elizabeth Kelly. I had grown frustrated and was ready to give up, but with his guidence and perseverance we were able to get over the hurdle. Thank you gentlemen, you've made my day.

Tip my hat to you. I was able to find Hugh & Elizabeth Dixon's 1891-1901 census records on Scotlandspeople using the wildcard of Di*on. My great great great grandfather Hugh Dixon seemed to be a Jack of all trades; 1851 census no listing, m 1 dec 1854 to Janet Hamilton in Kilbirnie, 1861 Kilbirnie, Ironestone Miner, 1871 Kilbirnie, General Dealer, 2nd marriage 14 Sept 1874 Kilbirnie, 1881, Johnstone, a Hawker, 1891 Kilbirnie, a Lodging House Keeper and 1901 Kilbirnie, a Lodging House Keeper. And what a surprise to find his 3 daughters living on his street in the 1901 census.
Many Thanks
Marilyn
