1901 census, Harriet Street .....

Post by CathieL » Fri Jan 06, 2006 9:50 pm

Hello everyone
I have just wasted a bunch of credits looking for my McKennas in the 1901 census, the few I found were wrong and mainly I found "no results". I know they are there and I am pretty sure they are in Harriet street. Is there a way to look at the census by street?

Hi Cathy

Sorry...no way that I know of to search by street through SP for any census. If you have the actual microfilms of the census to spool through you could probably isolate them. What names are you looking for?...and just where is Harriet Street?

Best wishes
Jean

Only if you are in New Register House, or other search facility (such as Park Circus, Glasgow, and hopefully with more facilities to follow some time) linked to NRH's DIGROS system.

The DIGROS system is NRH's in-house variation of that which is online with ScotlandsPeople. In the DIGROS system, there is a census browse facility for the 1871, 1891 and 1901 censuses. That allows you to do a page by page search (as near as street by street as you will get).

So far, NRH is behind SP in the online censuses. I believe that they do not have the capacity on their computer system for the 1861 census (and presumably the same for the 1851 and 1841 censuses that are scheduled to come online soon). So until their system is upgraded that is how it is expected to remain.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thank you Andrew and Jean
I hope to be in Scotland later this year and I will be spending a lot of time in NRH but in the meantime I am picking up bits and bobs online. I have a major brick wall with one side of my family so I am now looking for the McKenna side. Harriet Street is in Glasgow and I am looking for John McKenna age 49 mason by trade and his wife Catherine (or Kate) age 46. the children are Sarah, John, Margaret (my grandmother), Kate, Dennis, Arthur and Minnie. The only family history center anywhere near me is not open on a day that I could get there so I get a bit frustrated at times but I am addicted to this searching so I hang in there as they say!
Thanks again
Cathie

HI Cathy,
I had a similar situation with a family in Hamilton. I emailed Sp and gave them all the information on the family and the address where I "knew" they were living. The query was sent on to Eileen Thomson at the GRO who very kindly checked the records and found the family had been omitted. She then sent me a hard copy of the Census page.
Cheers, Fiona

Hello again Cathie,

I'm sure Jack will correct me (nicely) if I'm wrong but I'm pretty certain the streets are indexed at 'The Mitchell'.
I'm sure one of us will manage to look next time either of us is there.

Regards,
Annette M

Hi Fiona
Thank you for your reply, I was thinking of doing that but as Annette has said she or Jack might be able to look for me I will wait to see if they find anything. I would hate to e-mail SP and then find it was something I did wrong ( I am not always as clever as I think I am  ). I did try a few ways, first the father, then the mother then a couple of the children then I gave up but I "know" they are there!

Annette
Thank you once again for your help, if you cannot find them I will do as Fiona says and contact SP.
Regards
Cathie

Annette, i wouldn't ever (even nicely) correct you! Anyway you're right
Cathie, The Mitchell have Glasgow street indexes 1841 to 1901 (and some towns in between those years).
So no bother to have a look.

Note that these street indexes only give the enumeration district, not the page number.

You're right on that David,

That's why it's not easy on a few of the longer streets. Some of them are spread over a dozen or more enumeration districts.
(you have to scroll through each one)
And if the writing on the pages are very poor, or nearly blank, then you're in a wee bit trouble!
