Dunbar '71 census .....

Post by amadaeus10 » Wed Feb 02, 2005 7:50 pm

Hello everyone:

Does anyone have access to the 1871 census for Dunbar (East Lothian). I have a gg-grandfather Robert Fairbairn, a fisherman, who is there in the '61 census, but the next 'sighting' is of his wife and son living in Tranent in the '81 census. It says she is 'married' then, but I have my suspicions that she was a widow. However I find no trace of him or his death since the '61. At least a finding in the '71 would 'narrow the search'.

Many thanks

Gordon (first time poster, so please excuse)

Fairbairns of Dunbar

Hi Gordon,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

The 1871 census should be online soon (a few weeks away?). As part of the General Register Office for Scotland's DIGROS project, the 1871 census is next in line to be available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk in the same manner as the 1891 and 1901 censuses already are.

Otherwise, the options are a trip up the A1 to Edinburgh or Haddington; or a visit to your nearest Latter Day Saints (Mormon church) Family History Centre who should be able to order the microfilm in for your use for o fee/donation(?).

As you maybe aware, there are/were a lot of Fairbairns in East Lothian, just to add to your challenge.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew:

Thanks for the swift reply. That's great news that the '71 is not far away on SP, I didn't know that. I did know that BEW and ELN are a real rabbit warren for Fairbairns - as a Glaswegian born and bred it was a fair skelp in the mouth for me to find the East coast was my heritage (only joking everyone!!) :D

Just joined TS today, and thoroughly enjoyed reading the posts so far. Lang may it continue.

Kind regards,

Gordon
