Contacting GROS directly? .....

Post by Dennis » Tue Jan 24, 2006 6:11 pm

Hi,

I have an 1861 census and an 1871 census whereon the parents ages are in their 30's in 1861 and their 50's in 1871. I was told that since the query relates to the original records I should contact GROS directly.
Which email address is the appropriate one on their website:

Hello Dennis,

any query should use the "Contact Us" link on every page of the ScotlandsPeople site, and it will be directed to GROS if appropriate.

However, it is policy never to correct census information. Naturally, a mistake made in preparing the indexes from the records will be corrected, but not the original census information. In any case, ages changing by a few years each side of 10 between censuses is common. I would shrug my shoulders and move on.

Regards,

John

Hi Sporran:)

I've uploaded the 2 census docs for 1861 and 1871 for Thomas and Janet Taylor, where their ages go from 30s to 50s.

Hi Dennis

Be afraid if you do !!
When i first started i found one of mine's ages to be out by quite a bit so i contacted the woman who transcribed them for freecen and boy did i get a telling off !!
Reply
"It is not a transcribers job to re write history" !!!
Baring in mind this was an 1841 census and as i thought at the time his birth year was wrong on it ( but still dont know for sure  ) the enumerator did get his wifes age right at 37 ! no rounded off number there !

If i still had the email i would complain about her.

Good luck :!:
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
