Hi,
Looking for a JOHN WHITELAW on the 1841/51 census born 1827 SALTOUN, HADDINGTON. Think the whole family might have moved from the EAST LOTHIAN area and may have gone to IRELAND as he got married in DUBLIN IN 1855 to CATHERINE HALL. Their first child was born in 1856 in MILTON GLASGOW. He is on the 1881 census with his wife and children living at 223 HOLM STREET. Any help would be appreciated.
1841/51 census lookup please .....

Hi Helen,
Sorry can't help with 1841 or 1851, and very possibly you already have the family in 1861 & 1871; but in case not.
--
1861 cens 644-7 Ed 78 pg 7
John WHITELAW, 32
Catherine, 28
John, 2
Christina, 1
[James born 1856 is missing]
The BCs of James Andrew 1 Mar 1870 & William 11 Oct 1871 will show where they were born and should lead you to the family on the 1871 census. The Mitchell Library has street indexes for Glasgow 1841 to 1901, so hopefully they will be at one of those birth addresses (if different).
--
There's also a James WHITELAW, 52 born Haddington.
1861 cens 644-1 Ed 40 pg 8

Whitelaw 1841
Hello Helen,
Do you know John's parents' names or his occupation? Tailors seem quite prominent.
There are a few Whitelaw families living in the Haddington area on the 1841 census.

1861 censuses
Hi Helen,
Details of the previously mentioned censuses -
--
1861 cens 644-7 Ed 78 p 7 (St. George)
5 Sawmillfield St.
John WHITELAW, head, marr, 32, labourer or carter, b Salton, Haddingtonshire
Catherine WHITELAW, wife, 28, -------- b Balfron, Stirlingshire
John WHITELAW, son, 2, --------- b Glasgow
Christina WHITELAW, daur, 6mos, --- b Glasgow
--
1861 cens 644-1 Ed 40 pg 8 (Outer High or St. Pauls)
28 Bell St.
Niel McDONALD, head, marr, 57, slater, b Isle of Mull, Argylls.
Ann McDONALD, wife, 55, --------- b Morvan, Argylls.
Flora McDONALD, daur, u/m 31, shawl fringer, b Glasgow
JAMES WHITELAW, visitor, widower, 52, ------- b Haddington, East Lothian
Alas, no occupation for James, but IF this is John's father, then being married in 1815, should be at least 10yrs older.... Might be just another gent of the same name - or wrong age.
