Which district? .....

Post by ninatoo » Mon Feb 06, 2006 4:03 am

Hi all,

I am trying to get a clue as to the district of a birth before I spend lots of money finding the correct baby!

Family members in the 1881 census were living in Havannah or Harannah Street, Glasgow, Enumeration District 39. Does anyone know what the area would have been called please? The information at the top of the census page gives no clues other than a reference number 579434 and this: GRO Ref Volume 644-5 EnumDist 39 Page 12. Census place, Glasgow, Lanark Scotland. Of course none of the entries for the baby Margaret Docherty b 1877-79 simply just say Glasgow, hehe.

Thanks for reading,

Nina

Hi Nina

If you click on our "registrar" tab at the top of the page you'll find a place to view the numbered registration districts and their changes over the years. Click on Glasgow. You'll see that 644-5 was Blackfriars for your time period. There are two Margaret's born betweeen 1877-79 in Blackfriars. Both are illegitimate. But the one in 1877 has a mother named Jane. Not sure if this fits in with the 1881 family or not. Only you'll be able to unravel that bit!! You also have no way of knowing that the district of the census is the same one wee Margaret was born in!! I know..only grasping at straws...Good luck!

Best wishes
Jean

Of course the mother being a shawl fringer on the '77 birth might count for something

 Second time today I have been asked to look there jean!! I keep forgetting it is there!!!

However, your reply was immensely helpful! I knew the child was illegitimate and I suspected her mother was Jane Docherty. I even knew there was a possibility that the name Fitzgerald would be part of her name.

This birth registration lists the father as Robert Fitzgerald, (a lucky break!) and she is actually registered with that surname, but obviously must be indexed with her mother's maiden name too. It has the same address for the 1881 census too, so that clinches it for me.

Margaret first showed up aged 3 in the 1881 census living with her grandmother, a few uncles and aunties and of course her mother Jane, but as there was no surname to the child, and no indication of who the mother was, I just let it go for a while.

Looking for an aunt of this child who had married in the 1891, I found Margaret too, with the surname Fitzgerald,, living right next door with her mother Jane and half brother Patrick McGinn (who was also on the 1881 census). Jane lists them as boarders however....sad.

Well, thanks again for the wonderful helping hand, and for probably saving me at LEAST five credits!!!

I have an 1858 marriage Certificate that states Havannah Street as CENTRAL DISTRICT Glasgow.
Cannot find it on a modern Glasgow Street Map.
Hope this helps.

If Havannah Street was in Central District from 1855-1873 and Blackfriars from 1874-1906 then it was in a smallish area in south-east area of Central and north-west area of Blackfiars.

As shown in the TalkingScot registrar pages, Glasgow's registration district boundaries were completely redrawn in 1873-1874 and again in 1906-1907. In 1874 the majority of Central district became the south half of St Rollox. The southern part of Central district bcame parts of Blythswood and Blackfriars districts.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
