Hi Abacus

We would need a little more information about dates to do any sort of search for you.

Canongate as a parish covers quite a few years.

Have you looked at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ?
If you find them on the census and their date of marriage or the births of the children are after 1855 (the start of civil registration in Scotland) you would be able to look at the register entries for yourself.
Its a pay-to view site but £6 buys 30 credits and viewing a certificate only uses 6 credits.
Its worth reading their suggestions before you start a search to get best use from the site. there is more information than you can get from English certificates.

Hope this helps

Russell
Many thanks for the speedy reply.

I have done all my research using SP.
I have the dates of their births.
James 27/04/1827
Rosina 23/06/1830
Thomas 10/04/1836

The marriage of John and Ann was 27/01/1826.
However I do not have the age of John or his wife to enbale me to trace their birth dates.

This may sound naive but how do you access the 1841/51 Census if its not online??

Hi Sandra
The 1851 census is due to be online at Scotlands People very soon. There is also freecen, an ongoing project which has some census data for Scotland for 1841 & less for 1851 & 1861: http://www.freecen.org.uk/

If you are able to visit a LDs Family History centre you can order census films throught them for any area of the UK for a small fee. Also many libraries have census films for their own local area. Sometimes it is well worth seeing the film, rather than just the one page online at SP. Reading through the surrounding area very often gives a fuller picture of the area and its people and it is not unknown to stumble across other relatives living in the area, who you may not have been aware of otherwise.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Sandra,

Although John and Ann Mackay did not marry till 1826 it looks as though they had children before that. John's surname is given as Mcdairmid but I can't believe this is not the same couple.

From the IGI there is Elizabeth born 1822, Christian Ann born 1823 and Mary born 1825 all Canongate.

I had a look for them on Freecen but no luck in Midlothian.

Regards,
Annette M

Wow Annette

What a lot of additional info to take in.

Having found their marriage entry I did not consider searching backwards (as I said previously I am still very much a novice).

You are correct his wife was a Mckay.

I thought I was cute enough to have searched the various spellings of McDiarmid but missed out on this one. Such a lot more to learn!!

I have been trying to locate John's father. Its the male line I'm tracing back. Can I ask how you locate this info?? I do use SP.

I am so appreciative of your help. Been going around in circles getting nowhere

What a B, I'm going out tonight - another missed night of sleuthing.

Annette - you were quite correct these three girls do belong to John McDiarmid and Ann. I have now accquired copies of the birth entries for these three addtional children.

However try as I might I can find no further mention or entries of them after their birth. I have searched marriage and death entries?

They were all born in Canongate so did not move away from the area.

Seems very odd as I have located info on the following children - any thoughts or suggestions?

Abacus

Use ScotlandsPeople to search for male and female deaths on the basis of the dates of birth that you have, - play about with the +/- number to get a number of hits that can be handled easily.

For instance, searching for Christ* M*cd*rm*d, born 1823 +/- 3 years, produces 10 hits, 2 in Edinburgh, one of whom is most probably "your" Christian, - although her father is shown as James, the mother is shown as Ann McKAY !!, - the informant wasn't a family member.

David

PS Rosina's death can be found on the same basis, but you need to extend the range to +/-10, and change cities :!:

David
Many thanks - you gave me a searching tip I was not aware of!!

Spent most of the evening tracking another family group.

Can I ask how you assume or why you state the informant was not a family member?
