1851 Census - Scotland's People .....

Post by phend » Wed Feb 08, 2006 6:20 pm

I have been looking forward to the downloading of the 1851 census data on Scotland's People. According to the website it was scheduled for January/06. So far - nothing. Does anyone know when it might be available?
Regards....

Hi "phend",

Welcome to TalkingScot.

It may not surprise you that this question has come up a few times.

All going well ... soon ... I will not be as brave(?) as ScotlandsPeople as to predict the date, but at least we know it is out for testing, so shouldn't be far away (assuming nothing drastically wrong is found).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

A subtle but rather important difference here :!:

The 1851 census is supposed to be made available on a test basis to the SP User Group this week, but so far, no sign of it.

"Oh bother !!" indeed :!: :!:

If access for the User Group doesn't materialise by this Friday, my language may well be somewhat stronger :!: :-

Whilst disappointing, I would have some sympathy with the delay with the 1851 census on Scotlands People if there was some communication on the issue. On the schedule that quotes January as the availability date they say that say that they "apologise to customers for previous over optimistic timetable predictions and the table below provides a much more accurate reflection of future progress"!

I'm amazed therefore that no-one from SP seems to be responsible for keeping the schedule up to date and that it is now Feb 9 with no indication of what is happening.

Very frustrating.

Hi HSmith2007
I would have some sympathy with the delay with the 1851 census on Scotlands People if there was some communication on the issue.
I would agree that you wouldn't think it would take much effort to place an announcement on the SP site to the effect that they apologise for the delay - it wouldn't really matter what they attributed the delay to (within reason!) but it would seem only polite to do so, especially given their history of promises followed by late deliveries.

Best wishes

I see an announcement has been put on the SP site now (they must have heard us moaning!), but still no definite date - just some time later this month is all they're saying.

QUOTE

***1851 Census update 9 February 2006***

We are currently compiling the index to the 1851 census on the test servers, and this will be made available to the User Group for testing as soon as possible. Following this, the index and images will be recreated on this live site ready for launch, planned, subject to acceptance tests, later this month.

ENDQUOTE

Aye weel :!: , the User Group were very clearly assured at the UG Meeting on 30th January 2006, that the 1851 data would be made available to the UG members during the week beginning Monday 6th February.

I can make no other comment than to leave you all to make your own deductions <v sad g>
