1841 census dalmuir .....
Help Please,i've been trying on Freecen to find My GGT/grannie Catherine McCormick/ms/Docherty 1841 census for Dalmuir. According to Paisley Poorlaw Records, she was in Ireland since her birth and came from Donegal to Dalmuir 1840 and was there till 1844 then Paisley. She was a widow with three children,Mary,Rebecca and James. Her husband James died in Ireland. She made a few applications for assistance in Paisley, last saying she was frail and wanted to go back home. That was 1861 and no more was heard about her, unless she managed back home and died there.I thought maybe i might get some more useful info from1841 census.Cheers Nancy.

I was born/brought up in Dalmuir.I know that Clydebank Public Library Archives have the later Cenuses on film 1891/1901 but as I have never needed to go any further back dont know if they would have the 1841.Are you anywhere near Clydebank? The staff there are very helpful.
Otherwise it's NRH,MItchell or Park Circus for the info.in person. As far as I think Dumbarton Freecen is still in processing stage so dont know when it will be aviable.

I don't know if they will have the 1841 Census but they may be able to order it for you.
Oh happy days there when I was a teenager-the discos, the youth conferences, volleyball etc.The bus terminus was next to the building & a big crowd of us would arrive/leave on the same bus & then to the Renfrew Ferry & then depending on finances a walk or a bus home to Dalmuir. My sister& brother-in-law did a fair bit of courting this way(I'm no saying!)

Hi Joette,
As you know I was brought up in Dalmuir/Clydebank too. I notice that you have Torrance on your "looking for" list. I went to school with a Janet Torrance in the 60s. She lived on a farm up on the Boulevard, just next to Duntocher and had the most fabulous red hair. I wondered if this is where your connections were leading?
Cheers
Clydesdale.

Hi Helen I think they were a farming family but as far as I know no connection. There was some scandal but I can't remember-involved a murder -I think the farmer shot his wife-do you remember?

You are right joette - caused quite a stir in the area. I felt so sorry as the girl I went to school with, Janet, was really nice and how do you approach something like that to let people know you are thinking of them? Do you know the Auchentoshan School across the road from there? The one for the children who are slow learners? I heard when I was up there at the New Year that they have sold the site to house developers and the school is to be closed. Seems nothing is sacred any more.

Yep it is amazing that suddenly because house prices have risen that intergration is the watchword in Education. Now i agree on that BUT what about the adults some of whom have been attending since they were children? There was a fire there & I think the cost of rebuilding was too much or maybe they did what Glasgow Health Board did with Duntocher Hospital where I used to work-spent millions upgrading it & then within months sold it off to property developers.
That was a great wee unit where you got to build a rapport with the families etc.
Glad I wasn't misremembering re the Torrance scandal-it was because of the name(my Mother's middle name) & the fact I am a bit of a ghoul!

How long ago since you were last up here at discos
There's such a lot of new housing i doubt if you'd recognise the place! My grandkids get their schoolbus outside Church eveyday.Theres still a bus stop there, but no longer the terminus. Thanks again Joette,
