Thanks Jean,Jack and Annette.

I'm not so sure that you did not find the marriage already....the Pruden Stewert/John Meiklewee on 19 Feb 1848 in Kilwinning gets my vote!!

I found Prudence on Freecen.
1841 census
Prudence Stewert F 20 Cotton Bleacher born outside census county
This is 1 of 18 entries for the address Kirkton Woman House.
Also found at same address:
Agnes Stewart F 15 Cotton Bleacher Born Renfrewshire

I'll keep an eye on her incase they may be related.

Some Neilston censuses

Post by Jack » Sat Feb 12, 2005 6:40 pm

Hi Heather,

Here's what looks like Prudence 1841 to 1871. The 1841 says not born in County, but maybe enumerator was thinking not born in (Neilston) Parish? You'll notice a few age discrepancies.
Many ladies (married & widowed) are recorded in censuses by their maiden surname, and sometimes their married name as just, say, a Mrs. Smith or a Widow Smith.

I'll go along with Jean on the 1848 marriage too - but why Kilwinning? One of Life's mysteries?

Annette, glad you were alert on the 1851 - otherwise i might have missed wee Jean when looking at the original page!

Thanks Jack,I hadn't checked the next house thinking it was just that, the next house not a continueation of the Woman's House census entry.
In your first responce you mentioned :

Though i have come across a few children born after their father has died.

Where did you find these children?Did you mean they were children of Prudence or did I misunderstand you?

Hi Heather,

I've mislead you - was talking about some of my own ancestors. Sorry about that.

There were near 6 pages of female workers in the house - that's about 150 women.

Wishing you well with them Heather.

It ain't going to be too easy finding a sister - none have the "uncommon" of Prudence!

Prudence must have been special as her name has been passed down ever since. Both as Prudence McIlwee and Prudence Stuart.
