The 1911 Census .....

Post by Jamboesque » Fri Feb 17, 2006 6:27 pm

Hi Folks,

I’ve read in another forum (The BBC one I think) that there may a problem coming up with the 1911 Census.

Yes I know its 5 years away from being available but the point is still worth thinking about.

Apparently the 1911 Census was conducted at the height of the Suffrage Movement and a lot of women went AWOL for the night of enumeration. ie. stayed out overnight at marches and demo’s so that they wouldn’t be counted. Some commentators have mentioned a figure of tens of thousands did this.

Was this form of demonstration against the Government taken up in Scotland. I have no doubt demo’s and marches were well attended, does anyone know if this was a major protest technique up here.

Like I said its not like its not going to give us a problem in the immediate future, just something to consider. We can probably rule DWW out as providing first hand evidence but he will have an answer no doubt. :)
I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with

My Granny born in 1895 was very involved in the Suffrage Movement.
However she was also a dutiful daughter(sometimes!!!) & would not have dared to stay out overnight without good cause.I cannot imagine my Great-Grandparents allowing her to attend a Rally which involved an overnight stay. Also most working class women would have had jobs to go to.I however stand ignorant of the statistics so am waiting to be proved wrong

My Granny wouldn't have dared to stay away - having seen a picture of her mother I wouldn't have dared to either! Men ruled in Scotland back then and the working class women would have done something like this at their peril.

My grannie would never have dared to stay out all night, and I agree women in Scotland would not have gone agaist their fathers or husbands, or even worse their mothers. My great granny was a fearsom woman.
