Missing from the 1851 Census .....

Post by Clydesdale » Tue Mar 07, 2006 3:57 pm

Hi all,

I have a Yule Family whose men have all disappeared in the 1851 Census (including the 14 year old) from Roanheads in Peterhead. Given that they are fishermen/seamen they were probably not home when the census was taken. I have tried all areas, not just Peterhead.

So where would they be? Is a census taken while at sea and noted elsewhere please?

I have more questions than answers with my first look-up e.g. a child appearing I thought the mother was too old to have (She must have been 45 when it was born) and a lodger who was there in the 1841, who is now showing as a sister-in-law!

I hope you all have better luck

HI Clydesdale Yup thought I would have to run naked down sauchiehall Street but to true to form my Waddells are all mising from the Census so the citizens of Glasgow are safe for another day.
Interestingly though I found a Waddell family in Blairgowie where the father is Alexander & the Mother Jean who could be the Grandparents. The children they have with them are sameish names also but it is the name of the visitor to the household which is the same surname as Alexander's(my) wife.If I do find them I will eat a raw lump of liver-that's how confident I am that they are all hiding.

I take it you will be starting at Charing Cross Joette? I will meet you down at the other end with your clothes and a nice bottle of Irn Bru and a Lees Snowball. Or would you prefer a macaroon bar? Don't forget, no stopping on the way to do a spot of retail therapy!

Oh definetly from Charing x& could you make that Ginger beer & a snowball.
 I have to tell my Mother that her GGreatGranny appears to have shared her favours with three different fellas before settling on Alexander Waddell. This maybe explains why I can't find
1Any Christenings apart from my G-Grandfather & his youngest brother.
2No Marriages for either..
3No deaths for the siblings not even their "other" names.
4Why the name on Jeannie Graham's Marriage didn't match the census,death-she was my GGGrandfather's half-sister & had decided on a name for her Father which wasn't her Mother's maiden name or her step-father's.Maybe he was her Father.
Maybe your fishermen were in England or in Europe. I am sure that Marine vessels were enumerated wherever they were anchored for the night but if they were at sea?
Oh can't promise on the retail therapy
