Holes in 1881 census? .....

Post by annpa » Thu Mar 09, 2006 5:01 pm

Are there any holes in the 1881 census?
I am having a great deal of trouble finding my greatgrandparents and their seven children.
I have tried all possible variants of CASEY, including KAS*. But they don't appear anywhere.
They don't appear in the 1871 census, but they probably came over from Ireland later that year and their first daughter was born in Glasgow in December 1871. But all their children were born by 1881, all 7 of them.
They wouldn't take all seven of them home to Ireland for a visit? Going by family stories I don't think they would have been welcome there, anyway. (Irish Catholic/Ulster Protestant. too much aggro from both sides). The youngest two were born in Newton, Cambuslang, by the beginning of 1880. By 1891 they had all moved to Motherwell (Dalziel).
I really don't know where to go from here.
by the way, their names were PATRICK CASEY and MARY JANE (DONALDSON) CASEY
Cheers

Hi Annpa
Could you provide the names of the children please and an occupation for Patrick?

Found this, but have no way of knowing if its them - 7 kids, eldest child is a girl...but kids not born where you siad & wife is Mary Ann, not Jane:

Will keep looking, but some kids names would help narrow things down a good deal along with a d.o.b or year of birth for Patrick

Best wishes
Lesley

Well a few of mine missed the 1881 Census too as to how is speculation.
Most common in my experience is that they are living somewhere that you are not expecting to find them especially if their occupation was seasonal. They could be on holiday or visiting,in the poorhouse. They may not have been enumerated.
I try to search on the basis of most uncommon christian name, youngest in age, adjacent parishes.
If you can get to a LDS Family History centre they have the 1881 Scottish Census on Disc & you can play around & search to your hearts content-be aware that it is divided into Highlands/Lowlands & is not the Highland /Lowlands areas which exisist today-if you don't find them on disc search on another.
If you can't get to a FHC PM me with details & I will have a look as I am heading there on Sat.

Right - here's more info.

Father PATRICK CASEY - 45? b co Down/Co Armagh Ireland - bricklayer or gasfurnace man
mother MARY JANE DONALDSON 39 b Co Down/Co Armagh Ireland

children
PETER b 14 11 1868, Newry, Co Down
DANIEL b 3 2 1870, Newry, Co Down
MARY b 24 12 1871, High Church Glasgow
HELEN b 1 3 1873. High Church, Glasgow

KATE b 19 12 1876, Newton, Lanarks (register says CASSE)

They must have arrived in Scotland 1870/71 and worked their way from Glasgow to Motherwell.
Thanks for your interest

Yes, half of Dumfries and the whole of Dunscore registration districts are lost, presumably for ever. You won't find them in the SP or LDS indexes or transcriptions or in the census microfilms.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
