Is there any way, apart from waiting for SP, that a "missing image" can be viewed? I assume someone read mine to create the index entries. I have found grandparents and grandchild (I think) together & would love to know if the mother is with them and if she is a widow. This is my index
1851 JOHNSTON ROBERT M 56 LIBERTON EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 693/00 004/00 024
Libraries? LDS Centres?
thanks
Trish

LDS FHC for you, unless that long planned Scottish trip is happening in the near future and you can visit New Register House.
Also worth trying your local Ozzie FHS .............
On the other hand, SKS might be able to look it up for you at NRH, or the Edinburgh Central Library where it doesn't cost anything.
David
And I'd forgotten that there is now a CD !!

Ellens Glen Road (previously called Stenhouse Road) still exists in the Liberton area of Edinburgh. I cannot find it named on any of the old maps that I usually quote.Jack wrote:Hellens Glen?

Thank you so much Jack (also Andrew and David).
I knew she was a widow by 1852 when she came to Australia (as did her parents). I think the husbands death may be in England but I haven't been able to find it. The birthplace of her parents is also very useful. I hadn't known of the niece before but I did know Jane (Snr) was born Chisholm.
There is life after "no image"
Seems I will have another place to visit when I make that trip

Hi Trish,
I was in Edinburgh Central Library and found the entry on the 1851 census for Liberton that Jack quoted above. The writing was not clear, but I go along with "Hellen's Glen". It showed the property to be within "Stenhouse Village". If the sequence of houses on the census is to be taken as a walkable route in that order, then Hellen's Glen was the last house on leaving the village southwards towards the next settlement at Hyvots Mill.
Go to www.old-maps.co.uk and input co-ordinates 328231,669207. Click on the "co-ordinate" marker, and [search]. That should show you a map, centred on Stenhouse village, Liberton (not to be confused with the Stenhouse in the west of Edinburgh).
If you are seeking to visit Ellens Glen Road on a visit to Edinburgh, make sure to access it from the east end at Gilmerton Road. The west end at Lasswade Road is closed off these days, and the south access from Hyvots is now a footpath as far as I know. I think some of the old buildings may still be there, but I have not been down that road in the last 20 years. I know some house building has been done in that area which used to be a semi-rural area within built-up Edinburgh.
A modern map of the area can be found at www.streetmap.co.uk if you input the co-ordinates 328231,669207 and click on the "OS Grid" marker, then [search].
All the best,
Andrew Paterson
