Birth Name for married women on Census .....

Post by trish1 » Fri Mar 10, 2006 3:31 pm

How common would it be for a married woman to be listed under her birth name in 1851? I have just found one of my ancestors listed this way. The couple were definitely married (as definite as a parish entry can be). They had 2 children by 1851 and I found the family through the children in the index.

thanks

Trish

Not at all uncommon for the wife to be shown with her maiden name.

In my own experience, particularly common in Ayrshire.
