1851 census - Bower, Caithness .....

Post by setait » Wed Mar 22, 2006 4:43 pm

I don't know if anyone else has had a problem, but most or all of Bower parish appears to be missing from the indexes on SP. I've just tried to find some of my family whose details I already had from FreeCEN and failed miserably. To check I searched for my family surnames (Campbell, Calder, Bain, Swanson) with no ages or forenames and limited the search to the parish of Bower. Every search returned no results. I have reported the problem to SP & will let you know what their response is.

After several messages of the "sorry - we can't help you with individual research" type answers there's a new message on the SP front page "Missing 1851 census RDs" which says that they are aware of issues with Bower, Dunnet, Canisby and Halkirk districts. It also advises that Kilmarnock RD (mentioned in another thread) is missing.

As a member of the ScotlandsPeople User Group I'd be interested in seeing the text of these "sorry - we can't help you with individual research" messages. Please contact me on 106200.1510ATcompuserve.com .
