Alfred James Devonshire .....

Post by donnab » Sat Apr 01, 2006 6:13 pm

Hello Everyone:

I'm trying to find the census report for a Alfred James Devonshire DOB Feb 26, 1866 who immigrated to Canada in 1886 he married Margaret Dougherty Mar 22, 1888. Margaret was born her in Canada however Alfred's Tribal is listed as Scotch but his birthplace is listed as England. Any information would be helpful I'm trying to find his parents names. Alfred and Margaret had 3 daughters Florence, Annie (My great-grandmother) and Marion so its possible one of his daughters may also be name after his mother. I'm not sure how to get access to the Ireland/Scotland Census yet since I just signed up to your formum.

Many Thanks

Donna

Hi Donna
I'm not sure how to get access to the Ireland/Scotland Census
I can't help you with the Irish census but the 1851 to 1901 census for Scotland is at the pay-per-view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
and its also worth trying freecen first, although its not complete - http://freecen.rootsweb.com/

There are some more census links here:

Best wishes

Hi Donna

May I give you a warm welcome to TalkingScot.

It may be worth your while having a look on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at the Devonshire births in Scotland. There are only four over a long period of time. I couldn't see one for Alfred, but one of them may tiurn out to be a sibling.

Kind regards
Cattriona

Hi Donna

If Alfred was indeed born in England , there are a number of sites where you can look for English ( and Welsh) births:

www.freebmd.org.uk is a free site and they have done a large swathe of transcriptions of the England/Wales BMD indexes from 1837 - 1910. They do have an Alfred James Devonshire birth -but its two years later than the one you are looking for.

(Whatever site you use for English births, you still need to pay £7 to get a copy of the cert - so I hope he turns out to be Scottish after all - much cheaper !!! )
