Stuck at the beginning-where to start ?.....

Post by HeatherV » Wed Mar 02, 2005 2:33 pm

Suggestions appreciated on this as I just don't know where else to look after months of trawling for a clue !!! I have two individuals that are my Gx5 Grandparents, names are John FULTON and Janet FAIRLIE. I know that they lived in New Luce, Wigtownshire between 1800 and 1815, as they had three children born there and am assuming that they moved after that as I have found another child born in Colmonell, Ayrshire. I've not been able to find Marriage, Death or Birth records for either John or Janet on the SP site. Does anyone have any fresh ideas on how I could approach this and possibly find out some more about this pair ?

Thanks !!!

The online IGI shows 6 children to this couple, two of whom I would guess probably died young (and had their names re-used).

WILLIAM FULTON - Christening: 19 SEP 1802 New Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
JEAN FULTON - Christening: 18 AUG 1805 New Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
JANET FULTON - Christening: 09 AUG 1807 New Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
ROBERT FULTON - Christening: 15 OCT 1814 New Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
ROBERT FULTON - Christening: 13 OCT 1815 New Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
JEAN FULTON - Christening: 18 MAR 1822 Colmonell, Ayr, Scotland

The mother's first name is spelled variously as: Janet, Jannet, Jennet;
and her surname as: Fairley, Fairly, Farley
No sign of their marriage on the online IGI. The six births should appear on the SP index, but no OPR images online for a while yet. As for their deaths, that depended on them surviving until at least 1855 and dying in Scotland if they are to appear on ScotlandsPeople.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thanks Andrew,

I do have documents pertaining to one of the children, Robert FULTON b.1814, but there are no clues as to where his parents were born or married ~ and ~ this where I'm stuck.

Hi Heather,

Nothing to help you find anything on John FULTON & Janet FAIRLIE - it might be difficult because if living they'd be at least 65yrs old (probably older) in 1851. Can't see them in 1841 Wigtownshire at FreeCEN either.
Is this daur Jean (b1822) that Andrew found? Taken from the online 1851 Wigtownshire census.

There are a few more folk in the household, but John is the only FULTON - possibly Robert FULTON & Elizabeth McWHIRTER's son as he isn't with the family at Colmonell in 1851, but is in 1861 as aged 22.

Have you tried joining the Rootsweb Wigtownshire List to see if anyone has any advice on records for that area? Maybe MIs?

Mary,

Thanks very much !
I do have one photo now for Robert FULTON and Elizabeth McWHIRTER. But none for anyone else and I'm not sure if there are any others there in Colmonell. If you do see any names - FULTON or perhaps LYNCH, I would certainly be interested in taking a look.

Jack - I'll try the Wigtownshire lists and sites again.

Regards,

Heather
