Brannen family - Census 1831 Aberdeen and Montrose .....

Post by Maggie64 » Wed Apr 05, 2006 7:27 pm

Hello Here is Margaret I am new to this website "Talkingscot". I would like to ask you for your wee help that I am looking for information on my gggg grandparents Edward Brennan (Brannen/Brannan) with his wife Isabella Rae.
I would like to know if this family lived in Aberdeen in 1831 because I know that their daughter Mary Brannan who was born in 1827 in Aberdeen. But later in few years later the Brannen family moved down to Montrose from Aberdeen.
Please let me know if you can find these people on census 1831 in Aberdeen I have no idea what year they moved down to live in Montrose because I found them on census 1841 in Montrose.

And anybody know about this family please contact me. My gggg grandfather Edward was listed as Chelsea pensioner on census 1851 from Montrose. I just found out that he was with 88th Regiment of Foot Connaught Rangers. Any information on my family will be much appreciate. :)

Do u know where did Isabella Rae's parents Matthew Rae and Elisabeth Clarke in 1831 and 1841? All I know that they were married in Dundee in 1787. Any information on Rae family please let me know thank you so much.

thank you, Margaret from Canada, ex-Dundonian

Does anyone know if there are any surviving pre-1841 census fragments for Scotland that contain names of individuals? There are a few for Ireland, and also England (where as I understand it the census taker in a few cases wrote down the names of residents even though he wasn't supposed to).

But is there anything like that for any districts in Scotland?

Hello Maggie

I wish I could answer some of your questions but I'm afraid not. You see the information gathered from the pre 1841 census returns was only used for statistical purposes. While there are a few fragments that survive from the 1821 year (see another thread on TalkingScot where this was recently discussed http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... nsus#30576 ) there does not seem to be any fragments for 1831. (I could be wrong but even if there are a few the odds of them being in your area are very very slim!!) Very soon I expect the 1841 census will be available on the ScotlandsPeople website (link button at top of this page) and if you haven't been able to locate all your family this will allow you to search countrywide for them. You might just be able to locate Isabella Rae's parents in this year when the index comes online. If you have any interest in understanding just how the 1831 census was taken and the nature of the questions asked there is a very nice overview of it found here:

Hi David....I hope I may have answered your question too from the info I just gave Maggie above.

Best wishes to both of you in all of your searches!
Jean

I hope that Isabella Rae's parents Mathew Rea (Rae) and Elisabeth Clarke still alive in 1841.

I am curious if anybody can help me?? Do you have any old photographs of Queen Street in Montrose? My gggg grandparents Edward Brennan and Isabella Rae used to live at 8 Queen Street, Montrose from 1840's until Isabella's death in 1864. I was back home for holidays last October I went to visit Montrose. I went up to Queen Street to see what buildings looked like but too bad that they were not old buildings just houses from today. Any old photographs of Queen Street?

Please let me know thanks again.

Margaret :)
