1851 census help .....

Post by elisabeth » Fri Apr 07, 2006 7:55 am

Between Margaret Chalmers being born in Dairsie, Fife in 1822 and getting married in Wilton, Roxburghshire in 1852, I have no idea where she lived. When the 1851 census came online, I soon realised what a daunting task it would be to check every Margaret Chalmers in Scotland (I've already checked England as she married an Englishman). I printed a list of Margarets age between 27 and 32 and have slowly whittled it down- is there anyone who can check Margaret, age 27 in Bothwell, Lanark? or one age 32 in Hamilton, Lanark? or one age 32 in Aberdeen City? If only I could put "born Dairsie" into Scotlandspeople for 1851! Any help would be greatly appreciated before my husband starts divorce proceedings for overuse of the credit card.
Thanks

Hi Elisabeth,
I can only help a bit with Lanarkshire - there were 4 in the age group, and none of any other age as born in Fife.
Can't see a 27yr old in Bothwell - only the 29yr old.
--
Margaret CHALMERS
28 in Hamilton, born Ireland.
29 in Bothwell, born Shortrigg, STI.
32 in Hamilton, born Hamilton, LKS.
32 in Hamilton, born Lanark, LKS.
&
Margaret CHAMBERS
age 30 in Old Monkland, born Ireland.
--
CHALMERS and CHAMBERS seem to be interchangeable at times, so worth watching out for.
(i've even seen CHAMMERS & CHALMBERS...).
Also Margaret can be as Margrat, Maggie etc.
So maybe try this - but this will also pick up on Margery etc.
Forename - M*g*
Surname - Cha*m*ers.

Thanks Jack. I tried your suggestion and Scotlandspeople came up with 1 more match than I had found under Margaret Chalmers so that takes it to 2 pages to print out-maybe another batch of credits won't appear until next months Visa bill.

Hello,

There is also a Margret Chalmers (although she is a wee bit old at 31) living in Fife.

Thanks, Annette. In all the later census returns she was very accurate about her age (I only chose 27-32 to get my money's worth from 1 page but I now see I would have been better using more wild cards than I did). I will add the Abbotshall one to my collection and check them all in one go. I was fully expecting her to be in the Borders in 1851-her future husband was in Yorkshire, recently widowed, so must have got his job in Roxburghshire as a mill foreman 1851/1852 . How on earth did they meet and marry within a year?
