William's occupation is "Engineers Manager". Given that parentage, it's likely that John's occupation of "Pattern Maker" is the very highest grade of mechanical technician, - in other words he made tools or "patterns" from which other tools were made.

Thanks Davie,1 of 3 isn't in tonight and I can't seem to put up the image.What's the word between Engine( ? ) Maker.John is indeed a pattern maker for a time but moves on to coal salesman .I have this from his son Matthew's death cert which John signed.

The full occupation and script on the line is "Engineers' Manager (decd)"

No "...maker".............

Either your printer needs a clean or a new ribbon/cartidge, or your scanner glass needs a clean, as the "original" from SP is nothing like as streaky and messy as the one that you uploaded.
Looked at certificate in Gallery.

Please, please do not convert B&W TIFs to JPG. It fuzzes up the appearance and makes interpretation very difficult. JPG should only be used for colour pictures. If you wish to show colour aspects of a certificate, use PNG.
