Hi All,
I can't find my GG grandfather and his family on the 1851 census.
His name was Oliver McAleece-McLeish and any variation in between of the surname you can think of. I've tried soundex, wildcards, and all the tricks I can think off but nae joy.
He was living in Bankhead, West Calder, West Lothian on the 1861 census with his second wife Elizabeth and his son Daniel 19 from his first marriage and all three were born in Ireland. Also there were Margaret 11, John 9, Joseph 6, and James 1 from his second marriage all born in West Calder.
Oliver married his second wife Elizabeth in Lanark in 1850 according to the birth cert of one of his later sons.
I've tried searching under Elizabeth , Daniel, and Margaret as well but nae joy.
Were they in the Scotland or were they " on the road " when the head count was taken?.
All the Best,
Gordie

Hi gordie
You're absolutely correct.....he's not there!
If he is there the misspelling is so complete that even his own mother wouldn't recognize him
With names like Oliver and Daniel too......they should be a snap to pick out.......
Ah well....we win some and we lose some.....and the census takers lose more than a few too!
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
Thanks for your efforts. I found a Daniel McAlees in Airdrie, Lanarkshire aged 30 in the 1851 census born in Ireland and it also gave the county ( Armagh ) of his birth. My Oliver had a brother of that name who died aged 59? in Fauldhouse, West Lothian.
If Oliver had been on the 1851 census and it had given the Irish County of birth that would have made me very happy.
Ah Well,
Gordie
