An Elizabeth Sinclair married a William Mcadie in 1811 in Wick. She gave birth to a daughter Janet in 1812. Her husband dies in the Peninsular War in 1814. She dies on July 27th 1867 in Wick. I assumed she would have appeared on at least one of the three census's between 1841 and 1861 but I can see no record for her. Could anyone suggests possible reasons for this? Would she revert back to her maiden name up until her death but her death be recorded under her married name?
Any help would be appreciated.
A woman dies in 1867 but never appears on any census .....

Have you seen the certificate or only the index entry for her death? The reason for this question - could she have re-married, and hence appear in the census under another surname? If the death certificate shows three (or more) surnames, then she should be indexed by all of the surnames.

Hello eidacam
It is very likely you can find her using her maiden name. If you haven't searched for her under Sinclair there is every possibility she will be found. What was her age at death? Did she ever have any other children? It may be more difficult to pin her down if she remained single and/or moved about frequently. Scottish woman never give up their maiden names and it is not uncommon to find examples of married women with families still being enumerated with their maiden surname.
Best wishes
Jean

Thanks for the replies.
I have seen her death certificate but it only mentions the one marriage to William Mcadie. She died aged 85 in Wick. I thought that if she remarried she would have had the other surname on the death certificate. Also, if she did married, is there a way to link her with her previous marriage to William.; there are quite a few Elizabeth Sinclairs about!!?

I've searched for her daughter but without success. There is a Janet Mcadie that appears on the 1841 census and listed as 'independant' which could be her. A Janet Mcadie marred a Bain (from memory) but to complicate matters, two Janet Mcadie's were born within six months of each other in 1812 and I don't know if 'mine' is the one. The informant on the death certificate was unfortunately a neighbour....
