I hope I can get some help about something that is driving me round in circles.
My g-grandfather Patrick (or Peter) McColl married Isabella Tucker on 4th September 1868 in Greenock. Isabella's parents are shown on the marriage certificate as John Tucker, an iron moulder, and Isabella Wallace.
I tried to find those parents - John Tucker and Isabella Wallace - wedding. The only John Tucker I can find has ESTHER Wallace as the bride, not Isabella.
I also can't find a birth for an Isabella Wallace or a death for an Isabella Wallace Tucker.
Nor can I find a birth for the Isabella Tucker who married Patrick McColl, though I can find her death certificate, she died in Greenock in 1922.
Presumably my g-grandmother knew what her mother's name was to identify her on the marriage certificate as Isabella, but this woman seems to have left no trace. Incidentally my g-grandmother signed the marriage certificate with an 'X' and the registrar has noted beside it 'Her mark'.
Please help me someone ....!!!
Thanks

Some times you need to go sideways first!
Have you found the bride - Isabella Tucker - on the census before her marriage [ 1861]?
That may help narrow down who her parents were, if they were in Scotland at that time and she was living with them.
A lot of 'ifs', what age was she when she died in 1922? [ or rather what age is on the death certificate]

Hi G.
Following on Wilma's question.....have you looked at siblings to Isabella? The IGI parent search shows two children to John and Esther...
1. ANN TUCKER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 24 SEP 1855 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
2. ESTHER HALL TUCKER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: About 31 JAN 1858 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
A peek at the 1855 BC above shows you that John was a iron moulder and they had married in 1837 and had living children that could have included an Isabella.....so then
A peek at the 1851 census shows an "Eesy" TUCKER in Port Glasgow married but at her sister's house and with her is a 3 year old daughter Isabella. If the age of this Isabella fits the wife of Peter McColl....and if she always states born Port Glasgow on all her future census reports....I'm convinced she just got her mother's name wrong. Perhaps she never knew if her mother was called "Eesy"...could be short for Esther or Isabella!!!
Best wishes
Jean

Hello....
And in 1841 from FreeCen you'll find John and Ester in different households with what appears to be their parents.....so you can only assume they were married according to the info on the 1855 BC.....but at least here's a chance to get some more family connections. Also from the 1855 BC you get the bonus of Londonderry as the place of birth of Esther...not just the usual...Ireland!
Here's John in 1841

Tuckers
THank you everyone, for helping me over the brick wall. I'll need to take a wee while to digest all this new stuff.
I suppose it's possible that Isabella Tucker on her wedding day didn't know her own mother's name, so I'll assume it's Esther for now.
And just what I didn't need - more Irish connections!!
You've been a great help, thanks again.

Tuckers
Jean, in that 1841 census there are three John Tuckers, the 55 year old is my g-g-ggrandfather, the 24 year old is my g-g-grandfather, I wonder who the 2year old John belongs to?

Hi Georgia
I wondered the same thing. Might be possible he belongs to John and Esther. The 1855 BC shows them with 5 living children and 1 deceased son and the 1855 child was their 7th. In order to fit in 7 births with no twins it usually takes about 14 years.....so it's really a toss up if they had 2 by 1841 or only the 1 daughter. Just more information to make you scratch your head
I haven't located John and other children in 1851 yet.....that might help you decide!
Best wishes

Re Tuckers
Hi Georgia and Jean,
The 1851 census of John & family should be found easy enough on SP.
I haven't given the CD index Ref. No. because the SP No. might be different.
But the names & ages should be the same.
--
1851 census Port Glasgow
Margaret TUCKER, 59
William TUCKER, 22
George TUCKER, 19
Agnes TUCKER, 26
John TUCKER, 34
John TUCKER, 12
Margaret TUCKER, 10
Marion TUCKER, 7
Elizabeth Paxton, abt 1 [possibly with the family]
--
Making a guess i'd go along with yourself Jean in that John 2 in 1841 is the son of John & Esther,
but a look at the 12yr old John in 1851 will maybe say he is John's son?
(or Margaret's gr-son if she is the household head?)

Hi Jack and Georgia
Well two mysteries solved.....first off...thanks to Jack reassuring me that they were still in Port Glasgow I pulled out my deck of wildcards and had another go.....you'll find Margaret and the whole gang under the spelling of TACKER on SP in 1851.
You'll also find John aged 12 as grand-son. That now accounts for the kiddies names of:
John
Margaret
Marion
Isabella
so they must have had one more son between 1851 and 1855 and might have lost one between Marion and Isabella.
Best wishes
Jean
ps...oh...and the wee Elizabeth Paxton...she is also a granddaughter to Margaret so maybe the child of auntie Agnes??
