Is it possible for someone to be recorded in 2 districts in the same census?
Peter MacPhie/MacFie etc is recorded in the 1871 Census in Kilmuir with wife Janet and children.
He also appears on the 1871 Census in St. Cuthbert, Edinburgh,
with his Mother Margaret Munro, place of birth Kilmuir.
He is staying with his sister and B-I-L and children.Angus Campbell and Catherine
I know his sister was definitely in Edinburgh at that time. Her place of birth Kimuir.
By the 1881 Census Peter and Margaret are both back in Kilmuir
Is this feasible?

The censuses back then were only supposed to list those actually staying in the household overnight, - strictly speaking present at midnight, but some family heads misunderstood the instructions and included the names of all those ordinarily resident at the address, so that a person could show up twice in separate households.
Whether or not that's the explanation here, however

I take it that the enumerator didn't check that details were filled in correctly, David.
I think I will just have to assume that is the case

If the Head of Household presented him with a correctly filled in and signed form, and he had no detailed knowledge of those resident at the address, what was the enumerator to do?wini wrote:I take it that the enumerator didn't check that details were filled in correctly, David.

I have come across a case somewhere where the enumerator questioned the omission of servants who were then, apparantly, added.

David,
In this case the Peter MaPhie
in Kilmuir was the Head of the household so I suppose the enumerator would just have accepted it from his wife, Janet/Jessie., IF, as it appears, he was living at that time with his B-I-L in Edinburgh

He, that is the enumerator, shouldn't have, as he should have questioned why the Schedule wasn't completed by Peter !?!?, or was there some individual or mutual confusion between Janet/Jessie and the enumerator as to the exact status of Peter as "Head of Household", even although he wasn't resident at the address in question on census night ......
Now, if only we had a Time Machine
