Muiravonside, Linlithgow Bridge - Inn in 1841 .....

Post by jennyblain » Sat Apr 22, 2006 9:59 pm

I wonder if anybody can help with this one? - I had expected to find either or both of William Fisher, or Mary McCulloch or Fisher, running the Inn at Linlithgow Bridge in the 1841 census. But I can't find them! Does anybody have a copy of the 1841 census that is searchable by _place_, and could see who is running the Inn (it may be called Bridge Inn or Avonbridge Inn)?

For clarification: Linlithgow Bridge spans across from Linlithgow parish (W. Lothian) into Muiravonside (Stirling) with the boundary being the Avon - and the Inn is just over the bridge into Stirlingshire.

I know exactly where you mean [ drove past it last weekend].

Sad to say it does seem to fall under Muiravonside rather than Linlithgow in the 1841 census. And Freecen doesn't have Muiravonside yet.

I found 'my' Linlithgow Bridge Allans on FreeCen and worked my way through all the households before and after theirs but no joy :( I'm afraid.

I did put 'Publican' and 'Innkeeper' into Freecen for Linlithgow too but they were all in the High Street - except for one unfortunate Publican who showed as being in Linlithgow Prison :?

The only way would be to get the film for the 1841 Muiravonside census somehow or Callendar House or the Falkirk library should have it.

I'm hoping to get there sometime in the next couple of months! But, yes, the problem is that it isn't in FreeCen, and I'd looked forward so much to SP having this census to look up these particular people - and they aren't there. Which is to say the least surprising, as it was in the family for nearly 100 years, as far as I can make out.. So I don't know what's going on here.

Yes, it will have to wait until I get back north. However, who is the unfortunate publican in Linlithgow prison? That sounds quite interesting :)

Thanks for your attempts with this,
