Hello,
I am looking for my great/great grandfather who may have been born in Ayrshire. I have used the free search on Scotlands People to search for Robinson and it has returned many hundreds in various places. It looks as though I may have to spend rather a lot of money to narrow things down, unless I can search records/census returns for Ayrshire.
Can anyone advise please,
Brian

Hello Brian,
Welcome to TalkingScot..
We've all walked in your shoes at one time or another. But if you list a full name and dates perhaps someone might be able to help you further along.
Regards
Marilyn

Karen, Marilyn,
Thanks for your replies.
This is what I have so far, courtesy of a member of the family:
Gt. grandfather: Thomas Robinson, born Ayrshire 1852, address?, Coal Miner. Moved to my home town Burnley, date?, married Burnley date?, to Elizabeth Tattersall, born Burnley 1847/8, Cotton weaver. Their address in Burnley is known.
My original post states that I found Robinsons in 'manyplaces', what I should have said was: found in many different records, census, Parish records etc.
I suppose my original question should have been: can I narrow down searches on ScotlandsPeople to Ayrshire records instead of having to wade through everything. I dont mind having to pay for the information, but any guidance or advice on making things a little less 'painfull'
would be appreciated.
Brian

Hi Brian,
I know nothing of English records, but i'm sure someone will be able to help.
Do you know Thomas' parents' names?
This marriage is from the IGI.

ps, meant to say - Robinson & Robertson can, at times, be interchangeable, and there's Robison too.

You could try searching the Ayrshire 1861 census...it won't give you an exact birthdate, but you can search for your rellie by approximate age, and also hopefully get to see some other family members!
And a big welcome to the most addictive hobby in the world!

If you already have the marriage cert. it will have Thomas fathers name and occupation(hopefully). Witnesses names,( as sometimes a brother) , would be useful for the next stage.
Thereafter , I think your best bet would be the 1861 census for Ayrshire, using Thomas Rob*s*n aged between 8-11. (Maybe slightly extend both ages in case of fibs on marriage cert.) I found only 3 matches in Ayrshire, if one of these match with his fathers name and occupation (and possible other siblings) it's a starting point, and thereafter a process of elimination if more than one match.
e.g. did any of these 3 die or marry before 1876?
Then check the 1871 (still only 3 ,I think) then the 81 which is 0.
This would only work if the family were still in Ayrshire in 1861. if not have you tried the Burnley 1861 census for the family and perhaps there was one member born Ayrshire after 1855.

Hello Brian
I take it that the info you have on Thomas comes from the 1881 census as that seems to match what you've got?
Well, I'm afraid the 1891 census just adds to your problems as it gives Thomas's birthplace as Scotland, Lanark
1891 Census
RG12/3370 - Reg Dist Burnley - Sub Reg Dist Burnley
Enum Dist 50 - Folio 55 - Page 23
Schedule 152
220 Garrow Lane
Thomas Robinson - Head - Mar - 38 - Fireman in coalmine - born Scotland, Lanark
Elizabeth Robinson - Wife - Mar - 42 - Cotton beamer - born Lancashire, Burnley
Alice A Tattersall - Daur - Single - 17 - Cotton Weaver - born Lancashire, Burnley
Jane E Robinson - Daur - Single - 14 - Cotton Weaver - born Lancashire, Burnley
William Robinson - Son - Single - 11 - Cotton Weaver - born Lancashire, Burnley
Thomas Robinson - Son - Single - 9 - Scholar - born Lancashire, Burnley
Still, the 1871 census gives a bit of help ......
1871 Census
RG 10/4150 - reg Dist Burnley - Sub Reg Dist Burnley
Enum Dist 39 - Folio 162 - Page 43
Schedule 220
Bowker Fold(?), Habergham Eaves
Thomas Robinson - Head - Mar - 53 - Coal Miner - born Lancashire, Altham
Catherine Robinson – Wife – Mar – 32 – born Scotland
Thomas Robinson – Son – 18 – Coal Miner – born Scotland
Mary Robinson – Daur – 11 – Cotton Creeler – born Scotland
Francis Robinson – Son – 9 – Cotton Doffer – born Lancashire, Padiham
Jane Robinson – Daur – 2 – born Lancashire, Garrow(?)
William Reynold – Boarder – Mar – 27 – Coal Miner – born Gloucestershire, Haseley
Don’t go rushing off to find a Thomas, son of Thomas and Catherine though, because Catherine is only his stepmother …..
1861 Census
RG9/3076 – Reg Dist Burnley – Sub Reg Dist Padiham
Enum Dist 13 – Folio 50 – Page 11
Schedule 54
Earians(?), Symonstone
Thomas Robinson – Head – Wid – 42 – Coal Miner – born Lancashire, Altham
Mary A Robinson – Daur – 11 – Scholar – born Scotland
Thomas Robinson – Son – 8 – Scholar – born Scotland
Isabella Brown – Sister-in-Law – Un – 58 – House keeper – born Scotland
Catharine Brown – Daur-in-Law – Un – 23 – Cotton Winder – born Scotland
Mary Brown – Daur-in-law – 1 – born Scotland
I don’t think Catharine is Thomas senior’s daughter-in-law. I think she must be the daughter of his sister-in-law Isabella – illegitimate presumably since Isabella is unmarried. And I guess little Mary is Catharine’s illegitimate daughter.
Given Isabella’s birthplace I would think that there’s a very good chance that Isabella is the sister of Thomas’s dead wife so you’re probably looking for your Thomas as the son of a Thomas Robinson who had a wife with the maiden name of Brown.
Sadly the 1901 census doesn’t help in terms of Thomas’s birthplace.
1901 census
RG13/3873 – Reg Dist Burnley – Sub Reg Dist West Ward
Enum Dist 35 – Folio 130 – Page 37
Schedule 221
79 Rosegrove L
Thomas Robinson – Head – M – 48 – Colliery Fireman – born Scotland
Elizabeth Robinson – Wife – M – 52 – born Lanc, Burnley
William Robinson – Son – S – 21 – Coal Miner – born Lanc, Burnley
Thomas Robinson – Son – S – 19 – House Decorator – born Lanc, Burnley
Anyway, these censuses help you plot the family’s movements. Your gt grandfather was born in Scotland but his father was born in Lancashire. I suspect his mother was probably born in Scotland though. Father Thomas must have moved up there for a while and probably married there. He may have moved back there between 1861 and 1871, too, as his second wife Catharine was also born in Scotland. You may be able to find Thomas senior with his first wife and daughter Mary A (age 11 in 1861) in the 1851 census in Scotland, either in Ayrshire or Lanark.
