Marion LOGAN .....

Post by Dibit » Wed Apr 26, 2006 8:29 pm

Please help I am looking for a Marion LOGAN in either the 1861 or 1871 census, I don't think she was alive after this. In 1851 she was shown living with her son John. She was a widow. She was born abt 1790. Her husbands name was Hugh LOGAN b. 1791.

Thank you...

Hi David,
If Marion was born in Bathgate then this may be her in 1861.
-
1861 cens 587 Ed 10 p 9 (Dalry)
Mirrion LOGAN, age 73.
-
Could be a coincidence, but just previous on pages 8 and 9 is a Hugh Logan 39, Jean (Aitken) 39 and family - all born Dalry.
Jack
ps, but SP might have her forename indexed slightly different.

Hello Dibit and Jack

SP has this 1861 census record indexed as:

1861 LOGAN MIRRION F 73 DALRY /AYR

Hope it's her!

If her maiden name was Brodie then you'll easily find her death in Dalry on ScotlandsPeople website!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi

I don't want to confuse things and you may have Marion's maiden name, but I have a Hugh Logan/Logue/Logg and a Marion McFadyen, their daughter Bridget married my gggrandfather. I do not know a lot about them other than Bridget had a sister Maria and a brother James. I first came across Bridget in 1851 at her marriage in Stirling, and then the family moved to Dumbarton/Cardross where Bridget died, but I have since found out that other members of her family aslo stayed in Dumbarton. Could there be a connection - although I always felt that my Logan/Louge's/Logg's came from Ireland.

Hello Jack and JustJean,

Thanks for the help, I beleive this is my Marion. :D Is that how she is listed? Living alone. Does it show she is a widow? Is there an address. :?:

Is Bathgate near Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland? Her maiden name was Brodie?

Using scotlandspeople, I think I found her death cert, haven't viewed it yet. But looks like she died in 1870.

There were many Logans in the area, but I will have to have a closer look at Hugh and Jean Aitken next door.

Hi David,
Yes, that's how Marion is listed in 1861 - as Mirrion, and i've often seen it as Mirren etc too,
so it's always best to keep a very open mind on how any name could be spelt.
Bathgate is only abt 4 mls south of Linlithgow.

I've no details on Mirrion as the name is from an index - but next time you're on SP you could've a look at the census page.
The others with Hugh LOGAN & Jean AITKEN in 1861 were, Hugh 17, John 15, William 10, Mary 8, Jean 1.
But as you say, there are a number of LOGANs in Dalry.

Marion's son John LOGAN might've married an Agnes HAWTHORN.
But confusingly there are 2 marriages in the IGI for those names -1852 and 1855, both Dalry.
There is a John 30 & Agnes 30 LOGAN in Beith 1861, with children Janet 5, Marion 3, Hugh 5mos.
[only guessing this is "your" John because of the children's names - i could well be wrong]

Hi Dibit,

Not to confuse you any further, but I thought I would mention that I recently found some of my elusive Logans by using the wildcards L*g*n. Mine were registered as Lagan in some documents, and for such a simple name, I never even considered wildcards before yesterday. As a result I found two elusive births and a hidden death as well. :D
